Gaslighting reporter using attacks on Asians – even when they aren’t racially driven – to advance own career (op-ed)

The following editorial is written by a staff writer for Law Enforcement Today.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- Time was reporters used to do just that…report the news. Oh, there were some grandstanders…Sam Donaldson comes to mind. You know, people who tried to make themselves the center of attention, part of the story.

More recent examples include the insufferable Jim Acosta, former White House reporter for CNN during the Trump administration, who always attempted to insert himself as part of the story.

And now in 2021, there are many more who are trying to make themselves the center of attention in an attempt to, oh perhaps elevate themselves to a national job. With that said, Meet Dion Lim.

Dion Lim is an Asian-American reporter for ABC-7/KGO-TV in San Francisco, CA. Lim isn’t just a TV news reporter…she also seems like a bit of a self-important diva.

Hey, she even has her own website, where she says that “she stands apart as a professional journalist who is willing to share her own stories with viewers and readers…” In other words, it’s all about her.

More recently, Lim has been obsessed with crimes involving Asians as victims. The type of crime or circumstances surrounding those crimes doesn’t matter.  Nor does it matter whether they were even crimes.

She has seized upon the recent spate of AAPI (American Asian Pacific Islander) crime in order to gaslight and make the stories all about her. She is like the caped crusader of journalists looking to shed light on those crimes. And she is more than happy to accept credit for her sacrifices in covering AAPI crime.

First, make no mistake about it. AAPI crime has been on the rise for some time. The issue came to the forefront last month when eight Atlanta-area people, six of them Asians were killed by a crazy person.

Despite the fact that the suspect, as well as law enforcement sources have said the killings were not targeting Asians but rather had to do with sexual addiction (six of the victims worked in massage parlors), the typical grievance industry seized upon the killings to make it about race.

So let’s go through Lim’s Facebook and see what she has to say about what’s going on in the country. Because Lim is clearly gaslighting about every single incident involving an Asian crime victim being a sign of some type of systemic racism against Asian-Americans.

“I think covering the hate is both a burden & blessing. Thank you for your trust so I can help shed light on the attacks on Asians. Thank you @CronkiteNewsLab. Proud to be alongside my Race and CULTURE TEAM AT KGO and at ABC O&Os across the country helping lighten that burden.”

Ah yes, the burden poor Dion is bearing by reporting the news.

Last week a car dealership in El Cerrito, CA., had a man come in with a gun, threatened to shoot employees and ended up stealing a car. The employee tried to stop the man from leaving the lot and was struck with the vehicle.

Once again, Lim made it about race and not about the probability this dirtbag was just looking to steal a car and wasn’t specifically targeting an Asian business. Because clearly, how would your average car thief know the business was Asian owned?

“Danny [Sun, the owner} I devastated by this and is determined to seek justice for his employee and all Asian owned businesses that feel like they’re being attacked. To show they are NOT easy targets.”

On March 28, another incident occurred where two women, who happened to be Asian were crossing the street and two thugs knocked them to the ground and stole their belongings.

This happens every day in cities across the country.

The fact that the victims in this case were Asian was all that Lim needed. Once again, she as the journalistic superhero was ready to pounce.

“I wish I had the bandwidth and mental fortitude to report them all so people could see the truth. This has GOT to stop.”

A Chinese restaurant in Antioch was targeted earlier this month after being broken into four times in the past year. In this case a man with a blowtorch apparently tried to light the building on fire, an act which was unsuccessful. Of course from Lim, all of these are “hate-related” and she gaslighted again.

“While the family can’t say for sure if this was hate-related—Alice [owner] says based off the increasing hate toward Asians they feel like it is.”

One trick pony? We’ll let you decide.

On April 1, an Asian couple was accosted in Oakland by four men when they returned home. The men ransacked the home and stole some property. That was all Lim needed:

“Note: for those who don’t believe this is race motivated—Roseni says 3 families on her block were robbed/attacked in recent months. The crooks assume the stereotype is true that these families had cash at home and would not report to police.”

March 29, a 70-year old man from Cambodia had his car torched. Since he is only one of a few Asian households, Lim appears to agree he was targeted because he is Asian.

The incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. and apparently the criminals, according to Lim must have known the car was owned by an Asian. Once again, this was in Oakland¸ which is no stranger to crime being the craphole city that it is.

It didn’t matter that neither the Oakland Fire Department nor the Oakland Police thought the fire was suspicious…that matters not to Lim. She wanted to make sure the message got out to the public that:

“We want peace right now. We don’t do anything wrong to people. We just want peace and live in the United States.”

This is Mr. Chheng. He is in his 70’s and woke up at 3:30 Saturday to his car engulfed in flames. He says he is one of…

It continues, with Lim glowing over a march against AAPI hate crimes.

“I’m particularly encouraged seeing how many young people & kids learn and show support. It’s happening all over the Bay Area and the nation. #StopAAPIHate”

Hillsborough turned OUT today to march against AAPI hate crimes!

When we say Lim is a one-trick pony, we aren’t kidding. Literally every post on her Facebook page is about crime perpetrated against Asians, yet Lim doesn’t mention that crime against ALL Americans has been climbing over the past year, so naturally crime against Asians would also be on the increase.

None of this should be surprising.

Yet Lim seems to feel that only Asians are being targeted for crime or she’s trying to gaslight that Asians are the primary victims of crime, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. This is not to dismiss AAPI crime whatsoever. Crime against anyone, no matter their color or race is unacceptable.

The point is that Lim, in what seems to be a desperate attempt to gain relevance and possibly get that lucrative national gig at ABC News has taken incidents of crime against Asian-Americans to an absurd and obsessive level:

“Since I was little, I wanted to contribute to 20/20.

It was an honor to work alongside my counterparts from across the country on this 20/20 special tonight.
Thank you ABC News for championing this discussion & even more so…not letting up. 👊🏾
PS: admittedly I geeked out a bit when David Muir said I have quite the reputation for reporting these stories!”

Bingo.  It’s all about branding, even when that means dividing America and gaslighting the public.

Another example:

“This has been circulating online for days now. I just learned the feds are looking into it and police will issue a press release where we’ll hope to learn if this is a real trend & happening. #StopAAPIHate, #StopAsianHate.”

San Francisco police, in response to the social media posts were unable to confirm any such “challenge” existed.

There are dozens more, and it doesn’t matter whether or not they can be specifically attributed to being racially motivated.

One final one, where a woman was attacked and robbed in San Francisco, as if that isn’t a daily occurrence for hundreds of victims in that soft-on-criminals city. Despite zero evidence of racial animus, Lim couldn’t resist making it about that.

While she is Asian she isn’t sure this is hate-motivated…but definitely finds it ironic that she was attacked the same day we saw enormous rallies against Asian hate across the country and here in the Bay Area.”

Dion Lim, ABC-7 in San Francisco—queen of the gaslight.
