BRIDGEPORT, Ct. – A former special education teacher accused of having sex with two male students was awaiting her trial when police caught her with one of her alleged victims, authorities said.
Laura Ramos, 32, who resigned from her position at Central High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault last year after police said she admitted to having sex with one of her 18-year-old special education students “a handful of times.” She was later hit with another sexual assault charge after police said she had a relationship with another student.
“Honestly, what is going on here?”
– Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin
Ramos was ordered not to have contact with the victims and was freed on $50,000 bond. But when police stopped her June 22 in Waterford for using her cellphone while driving, one of her alleged victims was in the vehicle, a violation of her bond conditions, FOX 61 reported.
Ramos was charged with distracted driving and criminal violation of a protective order.
“Honestly, what is going on here?” Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin asked Ramos during the hearing, the New York Post reported. “You were going to the beach with a boy who was a subject of your case. That is completely reckless.”
Ramos’ attorney, Edward Gavin, apologized to Devlin three times for the woman’s “lapse in judgment” as she stood beside him at the Fairfield County Courthouse.
“We acknowledge this is a severe violation of the court’s order and I have impressed upon her how serious it is,” Gavin told Devlin.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, told Devlin that Ramos has acknowledged she was in a sexual relationship with a student enrolled in her special education class.
“The victim was enrolled in her special education class at Central High School and she has acknowledged she was involved in a sexual relationship with him,” Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Ann Lawlor told the judge.
Ramos glanced back at her mother sitting in the back of the courtroom as a judicial marshal then handcuffed Ramos and led her away.
She spent an hour in jail after posting $250,000, the Connecticut Post reported.
The judge ordered Ramos to be confined to her home while not working as a waitress and to wear a GPS monitor ahead of her trial on two counts of second-degree sexual assault.
Police said Ramos complained to one of the students that her husband didn’t want to have sex with her. Later, the two met up at a restaurant and had sex in the electrical room. The teen told police Ramos texted him after saying it was the best sex she’d ever had.
Police said Ramos, whose husband recently divorced her and gained custody of their 2-year-old son, admitted after her arrest in a video-recorded statement that she had sex with the 18-year-old student a “handful of times” from December 2016 until April 2017, usually in her car.
Her case is pending in New London Superior Court. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating if Ramos had sexual contact with other students.
