PORTLAND, Ore. – The frontline of the battlefield is coming back to the streets of Portland.

But the police aren’t about to let their city descend into chaos.

Federal, state and local law enforcement are joining forces in the Oregon city in preparation for what some people are calling a ‘war’ in the streets.

Reports have circulated that a public rally planned by groups like the Proud Boys, Oathkeepers and Three Percenters is expected to draw a massive counter-protesting group from members of Antifa on August 17.

And this time they’re not standing in wait. Reports suggested that the state’s federal prosecutor has taken a more aggressive stance for this planned gathering in order to prevent the violent clashes from getting out of control.

After Rose City Antifa issued a statement asking counter-protesters to defend Portland from a “far-right attack,” members of law enforcement are making sure they’re ready to handle the chaos.

The Portland Police Bureau released a statement noting that they would be ready for any criminal activity that was being planned.

“Based on publicly-available information, the Bureau is concerned events on August 17 may involve persons interested in participating in criminal activity.”

Chief Danielle Outlaw said that the violence that has previously taken over the streets of the west coast city won’t be tolerated this time around.

“There is concern about the criminal intentions being expressed in the publicly available forums which suggest some attendees plan to engage in violence,” PPB Chief Outlaw said. “We are taking this into account and developing an appropriate plan with adequate resources to prepare for this eventuality…. We will also be doing outreach to provide information to local businesses, residents, and visitors so they will know what to expect and the likely areas to be impacted.”

Within the last few weeks, the criminal actions of Antifa members have been condemned by public officials, including the president. Because these ‘activists’ often gather in mass groups and usually wear masks to protect their identities, federal law enforcement groups are now considering labeling the violent group as a domestic terror group.

Up until recently, Portland leadership has failed to stop them from running rampant in the streets, faces covered with masks, often armed with sticks, batons, bats, pepper spray and other weapons. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has all but surrendered his city to the will of Antifa members during these protests, historically telling his police force to let it happen.

Trump took to Twitter last week to compare the group to the violent MS-13 gang.

“Antifa are terrorists, violent masked bullies who ‘fight fascism’ with actual fascism, protected by Liberal privilege,” Senator Bill Cassidy recently remarked. “Bullies get their way until someone says no. Elected officials must have courage, not cowardice, to prevent terror.”

He, along with Republican senators Ted Cruz and Bill Cassidy, has condemned the actions of the masked protesters.

Cruz called the group hateful, noting that they directly attacked others who share different mindsets or political views, often shutting down free speech.

“Antifa is a group of hateful, intolerant radicals who pursue their unhinged agenda through aggressive violence,” Sen. Cruz said. “Time and time again, their actions have demonstrated that their only purpose is to inflict harm on those who oppose their views. The hate and violence they spread must be stopped, and I am proud to introduce this resolution with Senator Cassidy to properly identify what Antifa are: domestic terrorists.”

Cruz recently asked the FBI to begin investigating Antifa cases similar to how RICO cases are handled. RICO cases look into Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations.

The FBI responded to Cruz and Cassidy’s statements in which it was noted that the bureau recognizes Antifa more as an ideology rather than a group.

“We have a quite a number though, I should tell you, of properly predicated investigations of what we categorize as anarchist extremists,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said. “People who are trying to commit violent criminal activity that violates federal criminal law and some of those people do subscribe as what we would refer to as a kind of an antifa-like ideology.”

This isn’t the first time that Trump has called out the group as of recent.

“Do you ever notice they [Antifa] pick on certain people?” Trump asked while speaking at a White House event for conservative social media personalities earlier this month where he recalled a violent attack on journalist Andy Ngo at a Portland, Ore., rally. “I mean, he [Mr. Ngo] would tell you he’s not the toughest person in the world physically, right?”

Trump was referring to the attack caught on camera as journalist Andy Ngo was brutally assaulted by a group of black-clad protesters.

Ngo was rushed to the hospital and suffered some pretty traumatic injuries after the attack, including a head injury.

So will Portland descend back into chaos on the 17th? Or will the newer, larger police presence help keep these groups from clashing violently?

We’ll have to wait and see.
