FBI encourages people to snitch on family and friends for ‘suspicious behaviors’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Sunday, July 11, the FBI published a directive on Twitter and Facebook telling Americans to report “suspicious behaviors” of “[f]amily members and peers” in order to “prevent homegrown violent extremism.”

On both social media sites, the FBI’s post read:

“Family members and peers are often best positioned to witness signs of mobilization to violence.

“Help prevent homegrown violent extremism.

“Visit https://go.usa.gov/x6mjf to learn how to spot suspicious behaviors and report them to the FBI. #NatSec”

The hyperlink takes the reader to a 32-page booklet in .pdf form called “Homegrown Violent Extremist Mobilization Indicators, 2019 Edition.”

The publication explains that it covers certain “indicators of violent extremist mobilization” in the form of “observable behaviors that could help determine whether individuals or groups are preparing to engage in violent extremist activities”

These indicators are grouped into three sections:

  • Group A: “Indicators are highly diagnostic on their own”
  • Group B: “Indicators are moderately diagnostic on their own and require one or more other indicators to gain diagnosticity”
  • Group C: “Indicators are minimally diagnostic on their own and require several other indicators to gain diagnosticity”

The book further explains that “many of the indicators described herein may involve constitutionally protected activities and might be insignificant on their own.”

It continues:

“However, when observed in combination with other suspicious behaviors, these indicators may raise suspicion in a reasonable person and constitute a basis for reporting.

“Law enforcement action should not be taken solely based on the exercise of constitutionally protected rights, or on the apparent or actual race, ethnicity, national origin or religion of the subject, or on any combination of these factors.

“Individuals are encouraged to contact law enforcement if, based on these indicators and the situational context, they suspect an individual is mobilizing to violence.”

Social media users immediately responded with criticism.

Senator Ted Cruz compared this FBI reporting push to activity in Cuba and China, pointing out on Twitter:

“In both Cuba & China, they also ask children to spy on their parents….”

Journalist Carolyn Glick echoed Cruz’s sentiment by comparing the FBI to the KGB.  She tweeted:

“FBI asking Americans to snitch on their family members. The agency has gone full KGB.

One Facebook user suggested that this call for reporting is ripe for abuse, commenting on the FBI Facebook page:

“Imagine having a bog-standard familial row/argument and then reporting one of them to the FBI for disagreeing with you…

People can be very spiteful.”

Indeed, given the latitude of some of the indicators, coupled with today’s anti-American sentiment, abuse would come easily.

For instance, in Group C (“minimally diagnostic on their own”), one indicator describes “Promoting violent extremist narratives” as inclusive of saying “The West is at war with Islam.”

Another indicator example reads: “Consuming or sharing violent extremist videos, media, and/or messaging, retweeting or linking to violent extremists.”

At a time when flying the American flag is considered offensive, and when attaching an American flag on the back of a pickup strikes fear in the hearts of liberals, many anti-American leftists would undoubtedly consider patriotic behavior and messaging to show potential for “violent” behavior.  The door is wide open for reporting on patriotic peers and family.

Meanwhile, as some Twitter users noted, those who have committed acts of violence and destruction nationwide, again and again, apparently get a pass from the FBI.

The FBI’s recommended publication is tailor-made for reporting violent groups like Antifa and BLM.

One all-caps example of a Group A, “highly diagnostic” behavior, is:

Another is:

Group B, “moderately diagnostic” indicators include:

“Creating or joining a group that promotes violence to address perceived social, political, or ideological grievances.”

These examples naturally call to mind the horrific destruction and violence perpetrated for over a year by Antifa and BLM, accompanied by plans published on social media, but there seems to be no indication that the FBI is concentrating on them.

Former ambassador and Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell called the FBI’s call for reporting “outrageous,” tweeting:

“This is outrageous.

“The @FBI has a growing credibility problem and this type of sinister snitching is clearly unhelpful.

“Why hasn’t the @fbi made more progress finding the BLM rioters from last summer?”

Attorney and former Trump campaign staff member David Wohl tweeted in response to the FBI’s post:

“AntiFa is the #1 domestic terror organization in America.

“Maybe you should stop ignoring them.”

Donald Trump, Jr. tweeted:

“The FBI wants you to spy on your family but isn’t at all concerned about a years worth of rioting, looting, arson & murder.

“The distrust their incompetent leadership is creating is likely irreversible.”

Other Twitter users contrasted the FBI’s behavior in other serious matters with the call for reporting on family and peers.

North Carolina Congressman Dan Bishop wrote:

“These people protected Hillary, abused NSA surveillance databases against Americans, used known, unreliable DNC-funded propaganda to spy on Trump, perpetuated the Russia hoax, & lied to the FISC repeatedly.

“And now they tell you that you should spy on your family.”

Mike Doran, Middle East expert and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, tweeted:

“If any person takes this seriously, I feel sorry for them.

“The FBI encourages us to snitch on family members.

“Meanwhile FBI leaders cover up for the transgressions of their colleagues, to say nothing of their families.”

The FBI is not the only entity calling for people to snitch on others.  Facebook recently encouraged reporting others for “extremism.”

Below is our recent editorial on that subject:

Orwellian? Big tech warns users of “exposure to harmful extremist content,” asks “Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?”

July 2, 2021

The following contains editorial content written by a retired Chief of Police and current staff writer for Law Enforcement Today.

SILICON VALLEY- Buckle up people. We at Law Enforcement Today have been sounding the alarm bell about the Orwellian type of environment that is becoming prevalent in our country.

A toxic mixture of social media, mainstream media, and government officials are making it quite clear they are after patriotic Americans. A recent development on the social media platform Facebook is something which should concern every American, be they conservative or liberal.

Facebook has apparently started a “rat out your neighbor” program. Today, our national spokesman, Kyle Reyes received the following message on his personal Facebook page:

“Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist? We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support.”

FBI encourages people to snitch on family and friends for ‘suspicious behaviors’
Facebook sending warnings about “extremists” to users-used w/ permission

The message then gives a link which can be clicked in order to ostensibly “report” your “extremists” Facebook friend. George Orwell was clearly a psychic because we are very much living in the 2021 edition of his classic book “1984.”

According to American Military News, Facebook Thursday began sending the notice to users which informed them they “may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently.” That was in addition to the message Reyes received.

In the so-called “Help Center,” for example, it identifies statement akin to “Minorities are destroying the country” as an argument a “violent group” might use to foment extremist content. It notes:

“Some violent extremist groups wrongly say that for the United States to succeed, its citizens should all be of one culture. However, there are amazing benefits to diversity, and minority groups like immigrants contribute a great deal to American society.”

It then goes on to quote Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as being in favor of immigration from other countries, that they said it “was a source of pride and patriotism.”

In the ultimate bit of irony, the “help center” also says:

“Extremist groups say violence is a legitimate and effective way to achieve change, but there is no evidence that it works. In fact, violence often makes things a lot worse and doesn’t lead to the outcomes the group wants.”

One more:

“Violence is against the law. Supporting a violent group can negatively impact you and your family. If you use violence, you may risk your freedoms, future job prospects and relationships.”

So in other words, based on this newfound clarity by Facebook, statements made last summer by CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and actions by then Sen. Kamala Harris who “supported a violent group” (Black Lives Matter) by helping bail out arrested criminals designate them as “extremists?”

So who exactly is Facebook hoping to take down with this newfound information? Conservative Republicans.

One only has to listen to the rhetoric coming out of the White House, among senior members of the military and the Department of Justice and they are telling us that white supremacy is the biggest threat facing our country today.

LET Unity

All last year, we saw violent riots in cities across the country, from New York to Portland. We saw buildings burned, stores looted, police officers assaulted and murdered, and innocent people accosted while out eating dinner.

Yet, all we heard from Democrats was crickets. Democrats, whose silence was deafening last year are now suddenly up in arms over the January 6 incident at the US Capitol.

Let’s get something out of the way. We in no way condone what happened on January 6 at the US Capitol. Tens of thousands of patriots descended on Washington, DC to have their voices heard in keeping with the longstanding traditions of our republic, in this case the right for redress of grievances and peaceful protest guaranteed under the First Amendment.

Those who decided to commit acts of violence deserve to be punished. However there are over 500 individuals, some who did nothing more than enter the Capitol building who have been arrested and in an overwhelming majority of cases are being held without bond. Some who have been taken into custody have reportedly not had charges filed as of yet. Some who are locked up are being held in solitary confinement, which Democrats tell us is inhumane.

The January 6 incident is called an “armed insurrection,” with the implication…no the actual statements of some saying that our “Democracy was within minutes of being destroyed.”

Interestingly, not one person thus far arrested to our knowledge has been charged with possession of a firearm. Not one. Some were armed with items such as umbrellas and maybe police batons, and those who bore arms and used them against law enforcement officials should be punished.

Some in the media still refer to the siege (we refuse to call it an ‘insurrection’; our Democracy was never in jeopardy) a “deadly insurrection,” this despite the fact that one person and one person only was killed during the incident—an unarmed Trump supporter named Ashli Babbitt.

Yet, despite all the bloviating about police officers in the country running roughshod over people’s Constitutional rights, not a single Democrat has asked for a Congressional hearing on what happened to Ms. Babbitt. Not one has condemned the still unnamed law enforcement official who gunned down Ms. Babbitt, an unarmed female who presented an immediate threat to nobody.

Contrast that with the treatment given to those who caused billions of dollars in damage to our cities, were responsible for the deaths of scores of people, and who destroyed much of our national heritage. An overwhelming majority either had their charges dismissed or received a slap on the wrist. The hypocrisy in treatment is glaring.

This brings us to last week. Joe Biden, flanked by his lackey attorney general Merrick Garland announced that the DOJ would be bringing on hundreds of additional investigators and lawyers for the purposes of going after so-called “white supremacists,” which they inferred were the greatest threat to our country today. More than China…more than Russia…more than Iran…more than ISIS…and finally, more than Antifa and Black Lives Matter.

So who are these white supremacists? We’ll venture a few guesses:

  • They are patriotic Americans who cherish and honor our American flag
  • They are God-fearing people who attend church or who pray to their God every day
  • They are proponents of the Second Amendment, gun owners who realize that police officers, those who are being vilified, defunded, and emasculated by politicians might not be able to protect them from criminals coddled by Democrats
  • They are Americans who believe in our Bill of Rights, who despise a government run by executive orders and who believe in our Founding Documents, that all men are created equal, that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights
  • They support our rank-and-file military, they support our law enforcement officers and believe in the rule of law
  • They are Americans who believe our country was founded on July 4, 1776, not in the year 1619
  • They believe that we should follow the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, that we should judge our fellow man not on the color of their skin but on the content of their character
  • They believe that we should give a hand up to those who need it but not a handout to people who want it
  • Finally, they are among an estimated 73 million people who voted for President Donald Trump in last November’s election

No doubt, we missed some more definitions, but you get the point.

So, the question becomes, how does the government plan on identifying these “white supremacists?” Aside from Facebook’s “rat out your friend” program, we also found another way just this past week.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson gave a preview of one other possible way, when he discovered the NSA has been monitoring his private emails, a claim which they (kind of) denied. The NSA is not supposed to monitor or investigate domestic citizens. That hasn’t stopped them before, however. And apparently it is not stopping them now.

All of this should scare the daylights out of any right-thinking, level-headed American. Today it’s conservatives…tomorrow? Who knows?
