NEW MEXICO – A New Mexico man is in police custody after allegedly beating his 5-year-old daughter to death.

Yahoo News reported that 36-year-old Brandon Reynolds had been charged with child abuse following the death of his daughter. Reynolds told police that he had been trying to help his daughter with her homework.

The two reportedly got into a dispute over the schoolwork, with Reynolds’ daughter screaming that she didn’t want to do it.

“That’s when the discipline kicked in,” said Reynolds in a statement to police. He went on to say that he began punishing his daughter by spanking her with a shoe, but then went into a state where he ‘blacked out’ and didn’t remember what happened after.

Reynolds apparently came to following his outburst and discovered that his daughter was in cardiac arrest. Reynolds made a call to 911 at approximately 1:00 a.m. and told them to send an ambulance for the young girl. He did not disclose information about the beating during the call.

The criminal complaint filed against Reynolds noted that upon arrival, responding units noticed blood stains on both the carpet and the walls of the apartment. In statements taken from neighbors later on, it was noted that the commotion could be heard in nearby apartment units.

The injured girl was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, and despite CPR efforts from paramedics, was pronounced dead. Hospital staff noted bruising on the girl’s back and side, alerting police who arrested Reynolds.

“I was hoping to have more time with her. My heart just hurts so bad,” said a post in the fundraising page. “She didn’t deserve this.” Nearly $3,000 has been raised in the last 3 days.

“They said there were shoe marks all over her body. Water shoes are pretty soft so for her to have tread marks, deep bruises, bruised lungs and fluid in her brain. He really just did not hold back,” Chantel wrote on the fundraising page.

The page also noted that the young girl was on the Autism spectrum and required some special attention. According to DuBois, Reynolds ‘could not deal’ with the diagnosis and subsequent behaviors that came with it.

“Her father killed her because he could not deal with her autism. As sweet as my daughter was, as all children they have resistance it seems that is something her father was not able to deal with,” said the GoFundMe post.
