LINTON, Ind. – An infant’s skull looked like a cracked eggshell. That is the way the injuries of a newborn were described after the baby was hospitalized.
An Indiana man was arrested Saturday after he was accused of beating his newborn daughter, Caela Welch, for months to make her stop crying, causing her skull to appear like a cracked eggshell, police said.
Tosumba Welch, 19, (pictured) of Linton, was arrested and charged with domestic battery and neglect of a dependent, FOX59 reported.
Police began investigating Welch after his 9-month-old daughter, Caela, was taken to the Greene County General Hospital on Wednesday. She was subsequently airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, said a news release from Sgt. Curt Durnil of the Indiana State Police post at Bloomington. The baby was found unresponsive and suffering from seizures.
“Medical staff contacted the Department of Child Services for a review,” the release said.
The “cracked eggshell” description derived from doctors treating the child. They discovered the severe damage to her skill when various tests showed multiple skull fractures. Moreover, the baby suffered from several brain bleeds because of the blunt force to her head.
“The worst of the bleeds was to the back of her skull, where there was one on each side of her head along with swelling in the same areas,” police said in a release.
According to WISH-TV, police said the hospital’s testing also found:
- Several healing rib fractures.
- “Non-accidental” injuries to the lower part of her collarbone.
- A fractured left ankle described as “classic jerk & yank” abuse.
“Testing had ruled out any medical cause for Caela’s injuries,” the release said.

According to the report, Welch later admitted to Indiana State Police he would squeeze his daughter and punch her in the head to make her stop crying. This had been going on since she was 4 or 5 months old.
Baby Caela is recovering in the hospital. However, police did not release further information on her mother or other family members.
As a result of the investigation, Welch was arrested on charges of domestic battery and neglect of a dependent. Consequently, he was transported to the Greene County Jail in Linton, which is about 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
