LINCOLN COUNTY, Miss. – There are eight dead in a Mississippi Massacre, including a sheriff’s deputy.

A weekend to commemorate Memorial Day turned into a massacre in Mississippi Saturday night. A man who apparently got into a dispute with his wife and in-laws was arrested in a house-to-house shooting rampage in rural Mississippi that left eight people dead, including the deputy that responded to help a family in need.

“I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done,” a handcuffed Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, reportedly told The Clarion-Ledger.

The shooting rampage occurred at three homes late Saturday night, early Sunday morning. Two homes are located in Brookhaven, one is in Bogue Chitto — about 70 miles south of Jackson, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said. The carnage began after authorities got a call about a domestic dispute, investigators said.

The slain deputy was identified as William Durr, 36.

The man accused of the murders, Godbolt, was being treated for a gunshot wound at a hospital, authorities said. They did not say how he was wounded.

Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said charges had yet to be filed and it was too soon to say what the motive was. Authorities gave no details on the relationship between Godbolt and the victims.

However, Godbolt himself shed some light on what happened in a video interview with the newspaper as he sat with his hands cuffed behind his back on the side of a road.

Godbolt said he was talking with his wife and members of her family when somebody called authorities.

“I was having a conversation with her stepdaddy and her mama and her, my wife, about me taking my children home,” he said. “Somebody called the officer, people that didn’t even live at the house. That’s what they do. They intervene.”

“They cost him his life,” he said, apparently referring to Deputy Durr. “I’m sorry.”

When asked what’s next for him, Godbolt said, “Death . . . My intention was to have God kill me. I ran out of bullets . . . Suicide by cop was my intention. I ain’t fit to live. Not after what I’ve done.”

Roadside confession from man accused of Mississippi massacre

The bodies of three women and a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department deputy were found at the Bogue Chitto location, said Strain.

The second crime scene was located at 1658 Coopertown Road in Brookhaven. The bodies of two juvenile males were located there.

The third crime scene was located at 312 East Lincoln Road. A male and a female were discovered at that location, according to Strain.

He said Deputy Durr had been with the sheriff’s department for two years, and prior to that was a member of Brookhaven Police Department for four years, according to NBC News.

The identities of the other victims have not been released, pending notification of relatives.
