Democrats mount pressure on Biden to skip debate, wife says ‘he will be there’

WASHINGTON, DC – It was recently announced that Presidential hopeful, Joe Biden, was receiving pressure from party affiliates to skip the debates with President Donald Trump this fall.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman wrote that he is worried about Biden debating President Trump because of the “unfair advantage,” which, according to Friedman, is that Trump refusing to release his tax returns and making untruthful statements.

Friedman asserted that the only way the “massive” television audience wouldn’t be easily misled would be if a real-time fact-checking team was on hand. He said Biden should refuse to debate until Trump agrees to both terms.

Thomas Friedman isn’t the only democrat that speaks as though he is running Biden’s campaign.

Democrat strategist Joe Lockhart also thinks skipping the debate is in Biden’s best interest. He alleged:

“It is a fool’s errand to enter the ring with someone who can’t follow the rules or the truth.”

Former White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart and other Biden supporters have been telling Biden for months to not debate Trump. They have said that doing so would give Trump more steam, just as it did in 2016.

It appears as though they know the strength of President Trump, and as though they’re afraid of it.

Although they keep saying that the president is “repeating lies,” they haven’t said what those lies actually are, other than the border wall with Mexico, and even there he twisted some of his words to make him look racist (no surprise there).

Lockhart told CNN:

“We saw in the debates in 2016 Hillary Clinton showed a mastery of the issues, every point she made was more honest and bested Trump.

“But Trump came out of the debates doing better I think because he just kept repeating the same old lies: ‘we’re going to build a wall and Mexico is going to pay for it,’ ‘we’re going to keep all those Mexican rapists out of the country,’ and ‘we’re going to make great trade deals’ — none of these things have come to pass.”

What it boils down to is they don’t like what he has to say, so he doesn’t want to be able to say it on a national platform against Biden.

However, Jill Biden has said her husband will debate President Trump at three separate debates. She said she didn’t realize Lockhart was writing such opinion pieces.

Jill said:

“He will be there. Joe will make up his own mind.”

It should be noted that Joe himself hasn’t said he is for sure planning on participating in the debates.

The left seems to be of the mindset that Presidential debates should be a thing of the past and there is zero need for them in this day in age.

Several opinion pieces have recently been written claiming that debates were “outdated” and solely for “TV ratings.” Some have even come out to say that debates should be completely canceled.

It’s interesting, though, that those opinions didn’t seem to surface until this election. Suddenly, with a strong contender like Trump going against the left’s weak and possibly dementia-ridden candidate, many are speaking out against the debates.

Democratic strategist and former Hillary Clinton senior adviser Zac Petkanas said via tweet, in an “opinion that no one asked for”:

“Biden shouldn’t feel obligated to throw Trump a lifeline by granting him any debates at all. This is not a normal presidential election and Trump is not a legitimate candidate.”

Notre Dame was set to host the debate in September, but has pulled out citing COVID-19 concerns.

Of this, Newsweek reported:

“Political commentator Bill Kristol, a so-called ‘Never Trump’ conservative, praised Notre Dame for withdrawing as host of the first presidential debate over coronavirus concerns.

“‘Good. No need to go to any trouble to replace this debate. Indeed, I gather Biden’s already all booked up with zoom calls in those weeks. Also, the Jewish holidays. And the new Perry Mason series. Too bad!’ Kristol quipped on Twitter.”

Elizabeth Drew, columnist with the New York Times, says debates should be scrapped altogether because they have never made sense as a leadership test. According to Drew, debates reward the exact opposite of what we desire in a president, which is intelligence, thoughtfulness, knowledge, empathy, likeability, dignity.

In agreement with presidential historians, the common leadership qualities of successful past presidents include a strong vision for the country’s future, effective communication skills, courage to make unpopular decisions, and crisis management skills.

Presidential expert Alan Schroeder notes that there are seven specific qualities for every president to have. The short list includes being a narcissist (or having a healthy dose of ego), willing to sacrifice for the country, being a strong extrovert, loving the limelight and being a performer.

These traits don’t mesh up with Drew’s vision of a president and the call to have Biden skip the debate calls into question his tenacity and fortitude.

If Biden is looking to show he can stand toe to toe with President Trump and come through as the better candidate, skipping the debate would be a monstrous misstep.
