D.C. police chief: Marijuana “undoubtedly” connected to rising crime in the city

Share:

WASHINGTON, D.C.- During a press conference on Friday, July 23rd, Washington, D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said that marijuana is “undoubtedly” connected to rising crime in the city.

According to reports, Contee held the press conference after two people were shot near a popular area of D.C. on the night of July 22nd. A recent shooting at the Nationals baseball stadium on Saturday, July 17th, also shocked the city.

During the press conference, Contee said that many people believe that marijuana is “not really a big issue,” but in reality, according to Contee, the drug “undoubtedly is connected to violent crimes” that the city is seeing in their communities. He stated:

“When you have something where people get high reward, they can make a lot of money by selling illegal marijuana and the risk for accountability is very low, that creates a very, very, very bad situation because those individuals get robbed.

Those individuals get shot at. Those individuals get involved in disputes all across our city.”

Contee said that he has seen marijuana-related crimes rise across the city, including a murder tied to an illegal marijuana distributor. He called illegal marijuana sales a “recipe for disaster.” He added:

“And again, think about it. People, what is the risk for people? Is there a prosecution that is going to happen? Really, is there a prosecution of a guy with marijuana?

I’ve heard some community members saying these guys are keeping scales on them where they’re measuring out the marijuana so that the police are not able to lock them up. That’s something we have to look into as a community.”

Late on Thursday, July 22nd, D.C. police asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspects seen fleeing in a getaway car after allegedly opening fire on a bustling street about one mile from the White House.

This is the latest in a series of shootings in the nation’s capital as Washington D.C. and other large cities across the country continue to see a spike in violent crimes.

On July 17th, a MLB game at the Nationals stadium was interrupted by gunfire, which was just one night after a 6-year-old girl was killed in another area of the city. D.C. Metro Police Department obtained video footage showing the latest suspects from Thursday’s shooting jumping into an “older black sedan” before speeding off.

Witnesses said they heard about 20 gunshots. The scene was chaotic and the sound of gunfire sent a crowd running. Police arrived on scene and found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police announced a $10,000 reward for anyone providing information that leads to a conviction. A report stated that one victim appeared to be targeted and the other may have been a bystander.

As D.C. continues to see a spike in violent crime and the police department continues to face staffing shortages, Mayor Muriel Bowser signed a letter authorizing city police to use “any overtime necessary to meet our public safety needs.” She wrote:

“Expanding and maintaining these increased police deployments in our communities during a year of no police hiring requires a corresponding increase in overtime. But, while the use of overtime is a necessary tool, it is not an ideal solution as it results in the burnout of officers. The better solution is to fully staff our police force.”

Contee said that staffing in his department was on pace to hit its lowers levels in more than 20 years.

Over that same period, the population of the district has grown by more than 20 percent. In 2020, the city council voted to cut $15 million from MPD’s budget and reinvest that money in programs that do not involve law enforcement.

According to MPD data, homicides jumped to a 16-year high in 2020 and are continuing at that pace into 2021.

D.C. officials who supported BLM street sign have ‘Cuba Libre’ street sign removed

July 20th, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.- On Friday, July 16th, Cuban Americans protesting in support of the Cubans calling for an end of communism painted “Cuba Libre” on the street outside of the Cuban Embassy in D.C.

According to reports, the same D.C. officials who not only left the identical kind of street signage for Black Lives Matter in place, but who in fact enshrined it permanently by sealing off the area and naming it “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” ordered what they are claiming is an “unauthorized” Cuba sign, removed.

On the very same day, the Department of Public Works erased the sign. The Washington Post reported that in a statement, embassy officials wrote:

“Despite the systematic policy of confrontation and aggression of the United States government against Cuba, the American diplomats who work in the U.S. Embassy in Havana have always been safe and have never been the object of attacks or other manifestations of hatred. The Cuban government expects the same behavior on the U.S. side.”

The Post also reported that President Joe Biden has voiced support for the demonstrators and called on the “Cuban regime” to “hear their people and serve their needs” at this vital moment “rather than enriching themselves.”

Reportedly, the letters “VZLA” appeared in the street painting, which is an apparent reference to Venezuela. Carlos Vecchio, the Venezuelan ambassador to the U.S. for opposition leader Juan Guaidó, tweeted a photo of the messaging outside the embassy. His tweet, written in Spanish, said:

“In front of the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C. it reads: Cuba Libre. We stand with our Cuban brothers fighting for their liberty. We share the same fight: Liberty.”

Many conservative members of Congress have come out in support of Cuban protesters and have condemned Democrats for supporting the oppressive socialism and communism that has caused the suffering of the Cuban people for decades and caused millions to flee to the U.S. in search of freedom.

On Thursday, July 15th, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced that he is launching an advisory team on Cuba to advise House Republicans on the “ongoing freedom protests and government atrocities in Cuba.” According to a press release:

“The team will help develop policies to guarantee the United States ‘stands in solidarity with the Cuban freedom movement and educate the American people on the tyranny of the communist regime in Havana.'”

In a statement, McCarty added:

“The world has witnessed powerful images coming out of Cuba over the last five days. With thousands of Cubans in more than 40 cities and small towns taking to the streets, the protests mark a historic moment in a society whose communist system has oppressed its citizens for more than 60 years.”

He stated:

“The Cuban people are risking everything to free themselves, their families, their country, and their futures from their socialist prison. For 62 years, we have stood with them in support of their desire for liberty and self-determination.”

McCarthy explained that the situation in Cuba has reached its “turning point.” He added:

“The United States must stand unequivocally with Cuba’s brave freedom fighters. They need our robust support, not weak rhetoric.”

After being picked to be on the team, Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), tweeted:

“Honored to have been picked. I was born in Cuba. I still remember leaving everything behind because of the communist revolution. I’ll never forget it. It’s time to end the cheap talk and get real on Cuba policy.”

In support of her being picked for the team, Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) tweeted:

“Our country has always been a beacon of freedom for the world! I look forward to working with McCarthy to help the people of Cuba in their pursuit of freedoms and rights.”

Former Brexit leader says BLM “wants to bring down the whole of Western civilization”

June 16th, 2021

LONDON, ENGLAND- For those who believe Black Lives Matter is only interested in taking down the American system, think again. Nigel Farage, who led the Brexit movement in Great Britain last year slammed England’s national football team when they kneeled for BLM during the delayed UEFA European Football Championship 2020, Breitbart News reported.

“Look, you cannot separate taking the knee from the Black Lives Matter movement,” Farage said during an interview with the GB News network, newly launched in Great Britain.

“It is an avowedly, openly Marxist organization that wants to defund the police and wants to bring down the whole of Western civilization—don’t take my word for it, just read the website—and you can’t separate the two,” said Farage, former Reform UK party leader.

Farage slammed England manager Gareth Southgate, who expressed support for the kneeling.

“When he said this week ‘We are about more than football’—no, Mr. Southgate, you are about football,” Farage said.

“The idea that it’s right for the football team to get involved with political gestures is a mistake, and that’s what the fans are rebelling against.

“And you’ll notice we’re pretty much the only team in the whole competition that are taking the knee,” he went on.

“I think [Gareth Southgate] has made a big mistake with this, I really do.”

Where Britain’s prime minister Boris Johnson’s government had been somewhat indifferent on issues such as taking the knee, in recent months he has actually defended Joe Biden against criticism about being too “woke,” with Johnson saying there is “nothing wrong with being woke.”

Johnson has also bought into the “build back better” mantra,  bought into by Biden and other leftists worldwide which is basically code word for a “new world order.” Johnson encourages doing so in a “more equal, and…in a more gender-neutral, and perhaps a more feminine way,” this past week at the G7 summit in Cornwall, England.

Conversely, Britain’s Home Secretary Priti Patel, believed by most to be the Cabinet’s strongest member regarding rhetoric has issued an unequivocal criticism of those who kneel, telling GB News that she doesn’t “support people participating in that type of gesture politics.”

“We saw last year, in particular, with some of the protests that took place, I speak now very much from what I saw on the impact on policing—it was devastating,” she said.

“I just don’t subscribe to this view that we should be rewriting our history; toppling statues,” she said, although she declined to criticize the football fans in Britain who have been booing England players for kneeling.

“That’s a choice for them, frankly,” she said.

According to Yahoo News, Southgate, Johnson and the Football Association had asked fans not to boo the so-called “anti-racism” stance. That didn’t seem to work, as there was an audible round of jeers coming from the estimated crowd of 22,500 at the match with Croatia at Wembley Stadium.

A spokesman for the Football Association (UEFA) said prior to the match that the governing body wouldn’t punish any countries whose supporters react to the kneeling gesture in a negative way.

“UEFA has a zero tolerance against racism and any player who wants to demand equality amongst human beings by taking the knee will be allowed to do so,” he said. “We urge spectators to show respect for teams and players taking the knee.”

He continued:

“UEFA will not take disciplinary action against the national association for their fans’ reaction to this initiative as there are no legal grounds to do so in the current competition and disciplinary regulations and to do so would be to punish a national association whose players have taken a stand against racism.”

Law Enforcement Today recently reported on Black Lives Matter coming out in solidarity with Hamas and Hezbollah in solidarity with the terrorist organizations. For more on that, we invite you to:

DIG DEEPER

GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP – Black Lives Matter has announced its full support of the Palestinians in the ongoing violence between Hamas supporters and Israel, a week after terrorists in Gaza began firing rockets onto Israel’s civilian population.

Black Lives Matter posted its solidarity with the Palestinians on its Twitter page on Monday:

“Black Lives Matter stands in solidarity with Palestinians. We are a movement committed to ending settler colonialism in all forms and will continue to advocate for Palestinian liberation. ( always have. And always will be ).”

The post featured the hashtag #freepalestine.

The tweet caught the attention of the BDS Movement, an anti-Israeli organization calling for a boycott of any Israeli companies and any foreign companies that “are complicit in the violations of Palestinian rights.”

The BDS Movement responded to the BLM tweet saying:

“Thank you for your solidarity. From Ferguson to Palestine, our struggles against racism, white supremacy and for a just world are united!”

The tweet compared the conflict in Gaza with the anti-police movement in the United States championed by Black Lives Matter. Ferguson, Missouri, was the city where Michael Brown was killed in a fatal police shooting.

The shooting of Michael Brown led to a false narrative that he had his hands up when he was shot on August 9, 2014. The incident resulted in a rise in calls for police reforms, despite the shooting being ruled justified when it was proven that Brown attacked the officer and tried to take the officer’s gun.

The incident is often considered the birthplace of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Violence between Israel and Hamas militants heated up on May 10 when Hamas terrorists began firing rockets into civilian populations in Jerusalem following a violent clash between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters at the al-Aqsa mosque.

Israel launched airborne counterattacks and activated its Iron Dome defense system.

Gaza’s death toll on Wednesday crossed 227, including 64 children and 38 women. Over 12 people have died in Israel.

A delegation of BLM leaders traveled to GAZA in 2015, the first of several trips to the region, according to BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors. In an interview with Ebony Magazine in 2015, Cullors said:

“This is an apartheid state. We can’t deny that and if we do deny it, we are a part of the Zionist violence.”

Cullors has said in an interview on the Laura Flanders Show that black people in America feel a “kindred-ness” with the Palestinians because of their “eerily similar” experiences:

“We are in deep solidarity with them, and frankly believe that Palestine is the new South Africa.”

Some local BLM chapters joined the national foundation in their support of the Palestinians in the conflict. BLM Paterson in New Jersey said in a press release:

“Our deep roots of solidarity are part of a rich tradition of mutual support and exchange between Palestine and US-based liberation movements, from the Black Panthers to the most recent communication between activists in Gaza and Ferguson, MO.

“Our struggles are connected in many ways, not least because the same Israeli forces forcibly expelling the original inhabitants of Sheikh Jarrah train repressive police forces around the world, including the US.”

The group made a demand that the United States government turn its support from Israel, long an ally of the United States, and re-direct $3.9 billion in US aid from Israel to the Palestinians:

“We stand together with our Muslim brothers and sisters during the holy month of Ramadan and demand that Senator Cory Booker, Senator Robert Menendez, our 12 U.S. Representatives from New Jersey, and the Biden Administration join us in condemning these senseless acts of violence and work to end the state of Israel’s campaign of terror against the Palestinian people.

“We demand that the 3.9 billion dollars in U.S. aid earmarked for Israel be diverted to help the victims of violence being perpetrated against the Palestinian people. The People United will never be defeated!”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have announced airstrikes ahead of time to allow civilians in Gaza to flee, but many civilians have been killed despite the effort. Palestinian rockets fly indiscriminately and without warning.

IDF posted a reaction to the violence on its Twitter account. The post includes a video purportedly showing Palestinians being used as shields for Hamas equipment and facilities, and rockets being fired into Israel.

The IDF said:

“Israel fights to protect its civilians. Hamas uses civilians to protect itself.”

Hamas is a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that has killed hundreds of Israeli citizens, as well as Americans, in suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks.

‘Squad’ member Rep. Tlaib calls Israel a ‘racist state’, makes claim that Palestinians were excluded from vaccinations

January 20, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) claimed Palestinians are being excluded from the COVID-19 vaccine because Israel is a “racists state.” She made the comments during an interview on January 19 on the left-wing program “Democracy Now!”

Tlaib is the first woman of Palestinian descent to be elected to Congress and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, along with Ilhan Omar (D-MN). She is a member of “The Squad,” the informal name for a group of six Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives who represent the left-wing of the Democratic Party.

During the interview, host Amy Goodman asked Tlaib what she thought about Israel being the “most vaccinated” country, vaccinating 20% of its population, while Palestinians have not been vaccinated. Tlaib responded:

“I think it is important to understand that Israel is a racist state. They would deny Palestinians, like my grandmother, access to a vaccine.

“They don’t believe that she is an equal human being that deserves to live, deserves to be protected by this global pandemic. “

Israel has received global praise for the rapid roll-out of vaccine to its population, including those Israelis living in West Bank settlements. Israel has the most-vaccinated population on the planet.

However, the roll-out has been condemned by human rights groups and the Palestinian National Authority, claiming the 5 million Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza have been excluded from receiving the vaccine. Israel disputes the claim, saying the Palestinian Authority refused help.

Regardless, Amnesty International called out Israel on January 6:

“The Israeli government must stop ignoring its international obligations as an occupying power and immediately act to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines are equally and fairly provided to Palestinians living under its occupation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.”

Saleh Higazi, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said:

“Israel’s COVID-19 vaccine programme (sic) highlights the institutionalized discrimination that defines the Israeli government’s policy towards Palestinians.

“While Israel celebrates a record-setting vaccination drive, millions of Palestinians living under Israeli control in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip will receive no vaccine or have to wait much longer – there could hardly be a better illustration of how Israeli lives are valued above Palestinian ones.”

https://twitter.com/billy993C4S/status/1351668824316276736

Israel points to the Oslo Accords, which gave the Palestinian Authority oversight of public health under the principles of self-determination. The Israeli government said Palestinians might receive surplus vaccines but said the Palestinian Authority had not requested help.

Originally, the Palestinian Authority condemned Israel for not including the Palestinians in the vaccine roll-out. The Authority’s Foreign Ministry said:

“The search by the Palestinian leadership to secure the vaccines from various sources does not exempt Israel from its duties towards the Palestinian people in providing the vaccines.”

The Foreign Ministry backtracked on their claim Sunday:

“Israel’s responsibility is not an abdication in any way of the responsibilities of the State of Palestine towards the Palestinian people, including providing healthcare and COVID vaccinations.”

American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris supported the Israeli claim that the Palestinians did not request help. He tweeted:

“Palestinians aren’t ‘excluded from Israeli COVID vaccine rollout. They rejected COVID cooperation with Israel. They’re in charge of (their) own health care under Oslo Accords. They spurned UAE’s (United Arab Emirates) COVID aid -They’re awaiting millions of doses of Russian vaccine.”
