In a story published this morning at the Associated Press’ Newsbreak site:
“The Honolulu Police Department has suspended the use of special COVID-19 enforcement teams after an internal audit revealed “multiple violations” of the department’s overtime policies. A group of about 160 police officers offered to work overtime to enforce city and state rules implemented to stop the spread of the coronavirus. An HPD internal review flagged potential abuse of overtime claims and has prompted investigations within the department, according to an HPD statement released Friday.
Honolulu Police Commission Chairwoman Shannon Alivado told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that officers were exceeding the 20 hours of overtime per week they are allowed to work. She received an internal memo from Nov. 10 reporting some officers were working more than 70 hours of overtime per week.
In a statement released by HPD last week, administrators learned of overtime irregularities and possible violations of department policy and notices. A subsequent review has revealed multiple violations of the department’s overtime policies and administrative investigations have been opened,” the statement said. “Officers and supervisors found to be in violation will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and restriction from working overtime and special duty assignments.” HPD said use of COVID enforcement teams has been suspended until further notice.
“This decision was made by the HPD administration independent of any outside sources and will allow us time to review the procedures. COVID-related complaints from the public will be handled by on-duty patrol officers based on availability,” the statement said.
HPD officials would not comment beyond the statement.
On it’s surface, making law enforcement go door to door looking for violations of draconian lockdown mandates and chasing down neighbor-ratting-out-neighbor complaints like the East German Stasi of the Cold War fifties is odious in the extreme. It is also a colossal waste of resources. Aside from these two factors, the Blue Line is largely populated by some of the most patriotic and liberty loving men and women in America; an overwhelming number of whom believe as Alamance County (SC) Sheriff Terry Johnson says: “When I took my oath of office I swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States. I will not enforce an unconstitutional law.”
In August during a spike in Covid-19 cases the City Council and a bunch of other elected and appointed suits hit on the bright idea to have uniformed officers maintain a high visibility presence in the community investigating complaints of non-compliance and enforcing arbitrary lockdown orders as they fell out of the puerile brains of the middle-aged hall monitors at the state capitol.
They would fund the salaries and overtime efforts of the officers named to their brownshirt dream team with federal CARES act money gushing out of Washington D.C. like blood from a sliced femoral artery.
This is how this writer sees things playing out in the Aloha State, a state with a population of approximately 1.5 million which has reported 17,400 cases and 240 deaths as of yesterday…(a real Wuhan petri dish if there ever was one).
The rank and file obviously understood that complaining about this potential public relations nightmare, these misguided and heavy handed tactics in the midst of anti-cop sentiment nationwide would be pointless and possibly career jeopardizing.
So they did that voodoo that cops do so well…they worked the system to their advantage. They intentionally killed this farcical program with overtime like gorging a foie-gras goose’s liver with milk till it burst!
Again, my opinion but would you put this cagey brilliance past them?
The administration and city council has no one to blame but themselves for not monitoring their little ratfink Covid Cop Comedy of Errors better.
Make no mistake; some On-the Jobbers will be scapegoated for this as the REMFs scurry to cover their keisters and attempt to save their pet project but nothing should come of any charges harsher than a wagged finger and a slap on the wrist.
“To Protect and To Serve” is more than simply a motto; it is a life’s commitment that thankfully (for now) does not include robbing our fellow citizens of Rights bestowed upon us by the Creator through the Constitution of the United States.
On the eve of Thanksgiving 2020 let’s all be thankful for the millions of Law Enforcement personnel who are standing up and saying NO! to the bureaucratic madness playing out all over America in the form of lockdowns, shutdowns, cancellations and all manner of tyrannical, soul-numbing restrictions.
