CNN loved Mount Rushmore when Obama visited? Trump visits? It’s now home to “four white men, two of them slave owners.”

MOUNT RUSHMORE, S.D.- Let’s just agree on something. CNN has ceased to be anything resembling a “news” organization. Instead, the network provides 24/7/365 “news” coverage which is in fact opinion programming.

During a “newscast” on Friday, CNN described Mount Rushmore, the majestic memorial located in South Dakota, as a “monument of two slave owners” on “land wrestled away from Native Americans” prior to a visit by President Donald Trump there on Friday.

However, back in 2008, when then-Sen. Barack Obama visited the monument they issued glowing praise for the monument.

In the 2008 broadcast, CNN anchor Ron Marciano gushed: “Barack Obama is campaigning in South Dakota. That state’s primary is Tuesday. Obama arrived there last night and got a good look around Mt. Rushmore—it’s quiet a sight of you haven’t seen it.”

Marciano’s fellow anchor Betty Nguyen continued the gush fest over the landmark monument, saying: Barack Obama is in South Dakota today. He arrived there last night. Take a look at this. HE got a good glimpse of the majestic Mount Rushmore.

Well, South Dakota and Montana have closed the primary season on Tuesday.”

However, twelve years later CNN has apparently soured on Mount Rushmore. Senior Washington correspondent Joe Johns said:

[A]t a time of racial unease, when protesters are tearing down statues of slaveholders and calling for the names of Confederate generals to be removed from army bases, the Rushmore event is a reminder that Trump is fighting to preserve these relics of heritage and history that some see as symbols of oppression.

And to indigenous people, Mt. Rushmore, with four white presidents, two of whom were slave owners, is one of those symbols.

Later, CNN interviewed Sioux Falls Argus Leader columnist Stu Whitney, who said:

I think that is a source of concern for people that see this certainly within a state with a Native American population nearly 10 percent and much higher in Rapid City, concerned about a place that has a lot of spiritual significance, and historical significance when you look at what they and most historians consider to be broken promises and broken treaties.

Meanwhile, another CNN “correspondent,” Leyla Santiago reported on The Lead with Jake Tapper: “President Trump will be at Mt. Rushmore where he’ll be standing in front of a monument of two slave owners [George Washington and Thomas Jefferson] and on land wrestled away from Native Americans and we’re told that he’ll be focusing on the effort to, quote, tear down our country’s history.”

President Trump’s campaign was not amused, blasting CNN alleging blatant hypocrisy in their coverage of President Trump’s Mt. Rushmore visit compared to Barack Obama’s in 2008.

In a tweet, Zach Parkinson, a Trump campaign researcher posted a tweet, saying:

“Fascinating how CNN called Mount Rushmore ‘majestic’ and “quite a sight’ in 2008 when Obama visited, but now it’s a symbol of slavery and stolen land.”

The tweet then linked to the transcript of the above referenced CNN broadcast.

Conservatives lashed out at CNN on Twitter Friday night, blasting the left-wing network for biased coverage. They complained that the president’s visit on Friday night, which was timed to coincide with the 4th of July holiday, was ridiculed and Mount Rushmore denounced as a hate symbol.

(CNN and the New York Times, to nobody’s surprise, have been reporting all week that presidents on the landmark have histories of slave ownership and cruelty to Native Americans, and emphasized that the land on which the monument sits was taken from regional tribes).

Of course, all of this sudden moral outrage, absent among Democrats and their media handlers forever, came about as a social justice movement has taken hold after the death of George Floyd. Liberals are seizing on the complaints of a small percentage of far-left zealots complaining that some monuments which they claim “celebrate slavery” need to come down, regardless of the historical figure.

They have even targeted Abraham Lincoln, the man who emancipated slaves and lost his life for doing so.

Tim Murtaugh, Trump campaign communications director, showed CNN retweets in which the network showed praise for Mount Rushmore pre-Trump, retweeting the following:

2013: First Lady Michelle Obama called Mount Rushmore one of the ‘great American sites.’

2020: NYT decries Mount Rushmore and liberals call for it to be taken down.

Both campaign officials also found that CNN White House Correspondent, annoying Jim Acosta had previously praised Mount Rushmore, calling it “a fitting campaign stop for a presidential contender.”

Murtaugh tweeted:

“Jim Acosta’s network would never alter its opinion of Mount Rushmore based on who was visiting, would it?”

Similarly, CNN praised a 2016 visit to the monument by Democratic socialist and two-time failed presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, referenced by Parkinson as follows:

“In 2016, CNN’s Jeff Zeleny called Mount Rushmore a ‘monument to four great American presidents’

Bernie Sanders said this is our country at its very best,’ called id an ‘incredible achievement,’ and said it ‘really does make one very proud to be an American.’”

Murtaugh noted that CNN seemed to have altered its opinion of Mount Rushmore in less than four years, and only since President Trump has been president, tweeting, “@CNN has had a change of heart on Mount Rushmore, for some reason, since 2016.”

It is interesting that CNN derides Thomas Jefferson. As the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and a key contributor to the writing of the United States Constitution, Jefferson actually gave CNN the ability through the First Amendment to broadcast their BS. Instead of criticizing Thomas Jefferson as a racist, which he was not, they should be thanking him.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is deep with CNN. You have a better chance of getting legitimate news on the Cartoon Network than on that clown show.
