CHICAGO – An off-duty Chicago fire lieutenant shot and killed someone who was trying to steal his car, according to police. The shooting occurred in the North Austin neighborhood Monday morning, reported Chicago Tribune.

The West Side crime and subsequent shooting occurred about 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Lockwood Avenue, according to police.

The fire lieutenant was not working at the time. Moreover, he has a concealed-carry permit and firearm owner identification card, according to police sources.

The 45-year-old left his car running and came out to find a 17-year-old attempting to steal the car, according to a release from the city. He fired his weapon toward the auto theft perpetrator to “stop the offender from running him over with his vehicle.”

The suspect was pronounced dead at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, and the lieutenant was taken to a hospital for observation.
