HOUSTON, Texas – Police are investigating after they say a woman was killed and an off-duty deputy was shot in the leg early on Sunday morning.

ABC 13 News reported Sunday that a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy was injured when he took a bullet to the leg.

The news of the shooting was tweeted out early Sunday morning, where the sheriff’s office confirmed that the injured deputy worked for Harris County.

Investigators remain at the scene and are trying to determine the cause of the shooting, as well as the relationship between the Harris County deputy and the deceased woman.

Police say they were originally dispatched to the 5000 block of Briscoe Street at 3: 15 a.m for a call of an accidental shooting. While the cause of the shooting is not yet clear, authorities have said that there was so sign of forced entry and that it appeared to stem from an accident.

Officials also noted that there was an elderly man inside the residence during the time of the shooting, but when police interviewed him about the incident, he noted that he had not heard anything when it happened.

The officer is expected to survive his injuries.

“He’s receiving treatment at the hospital at this point,” HPD Assistant Chief Jim Jones said.
