WEST POINT, N.Y. –  A training accident at West Point claimed the life of one Army cadet and injured at least 20 others on Thursday morning, according to a report from ABC News.

A source close to the incident confirmed that a military vehicle that was carrying over 20 cadets and military personnel overturned during a routine annual summer training mission.

The five-ton cargo truck is called a light medium tactical vehicle, said the unnamed source.

There has been an accident in the vicinity of the Camp Natural Bridge training site. Emergency vehicles are responding.

Another source said that every single person riding inside the truck sustained some form of injury.

The military confirmed the tragic accident on Twitter Thursday morning.

 

“There has been an accident in the vicinity of the Camp Natural Bridge training site. Emergency vehicles are responding. Please avoid Route 293. More information will follow,” the U.S. Military Academy tweeted. 

Army and local first responders are at the scene treating casualties near the Camp Natural Bridge training site which is on U.S. Military Academy property, officials said.

NBC New York reported that at least one cadet was airlifted, unresponsive, to a hospital with serious injuries after the crash, which was reported on Route 293 and Natural Bridge Road in around 7:30 a.m. Another four to five were taken to a hospital with back pain but were expected to be OK, military police said.

Thursday is the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when U.S. troops deployed into France. New York State is honoring roughly a hundred World War II veterans in a ceremony on Long Island.
