A female Trenton police officer was shot Friday while transporting a prisoner in Daviess County, Missouri.
Authorities are reporting that the officer was shot in the abdomen and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment. The identity of the officer and their condition has not been released at this point.
According to investigators with The Missouri Highway Patrol, the officer was shot just after 3 p.m. on Friday. The unidentified officer had been assigned to transport a prisoner to St. Joseph Hospital for a mental evaluation.
Authorities at the scene said that the the inmate who was restrained, was somehow able to attack the female police officer while in the police vehicle. During the attack the prisoner attempted to take the female officer’s gun.
During the life and death battle for her service weapon she was shot in the abdomen. The injured officer was life-flighted by helicopter to a hospital.
The prisoner that attacked the officer was also injured and was captured. He too was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened near Winston, Missouri. The officer’s police vehicle had stopped at a gas station. It is unclear if that is when the attack took place.
Several area law enforcement agencies and the Missouri Highway Patrol are investigating the shooting.
