During what many consider to be the infamous presidential debate on September 28th, Joe Biden was asked about what his concept is when he mentions the idea of “re-imagining policing”.
His response is in tune with what many localities have clamored about lately – sending in the psychologists and psychiatrists.
Good way to get them killed. Nothing more dangerous than domestic

Debate host (or participant, depending on your take on how that ordeal went down) Chris Wallace asked Biden the following:
“You talked about ‘re-imagining policing’. What does re-imagining policing mean, and do you support the Black Lives Matter call for community control of policing?”
Biden responded with the following:
“What I support is the police having the opportunity to deal with the problems they face. They need more assistance. They need, when they show up for a 911 call, to have someone with them as a psychologist or psychiatrist, to keep them from having to use force and be able to talk people down.
We have to have community policing like we had before, where the officers get to know the people in the communities. That’s when crime went down. It didn’t go up; it went down.”
While the concept of increasing community policing is definitely a good thing to champion, this notion of sending in the psychologist/psychiatrist squad on emergency calls poses not only potential calamities – but also seems impractical.
Now, without a doubt, police precincts could certainly onboard and retain mental health professionals and send them out on various calls. But even though the general logistics of this endeavor is possible, it’s really unclear whether the desired outcomes would be as favorable as perceived.
One of the first things to take into account is the general safety of these sorts of professionals during emergency calls. If the likes of psychologists and psychiatrists find themselves getting dispatched on emergency calls, then they’re now one giant liability due to inserting themselves into possibly lethal scenarios involving dangerous individuals.
Now, there’s certainly a means that could enact a lesser liability in these matters by training these medical professionals as police officers. But when people are trained as police officers, then guess what they do?
They respond as taught in their officer training.
Which means you may wind up with one of two outcomes when psychologists and psychiatrists are sent on 911 calls that involve a suspect exerting behaviors aimed to seriously harm or kill responding units.
Either these professionals run the risk of being, or gets, seriously injured or killed by the suspect – or if these professionals are trained as police officers, then you’ve now got a psychologist or psychiatrist that may use deadly force when faced with the threat.
Furthermore, numerous police officers and precincts across the country already teach methods of de-escalation to officers – and both the practices being led by a psychologist or psychiatrist on the scene likely wouldn’t change many outcomes.
Here’s why.
First of all, psychiatrists are in the business of diagnosing mental disorders, namely trying to identify if there are chemical imbalances present within the brain. A psychiatric evaluation can also take up to two hours for a psychiatrist to ascertain a possible diagnosis – but that’s also with the assistance of a patient sharing information about their symptoms.
But assuming a psychiatrist either already knows what the suspect is diagnosed with or can possibly determine one when sent on a call, this knowledge doesn’t exactly diffuse a threat. All a psychiatrist is able to do is determine what medicine they’re supposed to be taking.
This brings up to psychologists – which do have years of college under their belt – but are in a practice that revolves around therapy that can often take “several months or even years” according to licensed certified social worker Ruth Wyatt.
Emergency calls are actual ongoing emergencies that can present serious threats to any and all who respond – and suspects alleged to be engaged in violent behavior, whether it be due to mental illness or a depraved regard for human life, are still equally as much of an active threat.
There’s no universal magic word or phrases that can be applied in the variety of scenarios that police have to respond to when violent individuals are engaged in criminal activities. Furthermore, the vector from which a de-escalation technique originates from if delivered in a synonymous fashion is not likely to all the sudden create a less hostile scenario.
Overall, it seems like the possible risks and ramifications by deploying the likes psychologists or psychiatrists to emergency calls are awfully high in an effort to possibly reduce police uses of force when detaining suspects.

Flashback: Biden said police being attacked with a knife should ‘shoot ‘em in the leg instead of in the heart.’
WILMINGTON, DE – As he prepares to enter the debate stage, this is one of those moments he probably hopes you don’t remember.
Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden spoke on law enforcement at Bethel AME Church, a historically black church in Wilmington, earlier this year.
He wasn’t there to encourage unity between law enforcement and the black community, however.
His comments were regarding use of force policies and training needing to change.
Biden said:
“Instead of standing there and teaching a cop when there’s an unarmed person coming at ‘em with a knife or something, shoot ‘em in the leg instead of in the heart.”

It’s unknown if Biden understands that “unarmed” and “coming at ’em with a knife” are mutually exclusive.
It’s also unknown whether Biden knows that police are not trained to shoot in the heart. Police are trained to shoot center mass, which is due to the area being the largest and therefore easiest to aim at to stop a threat.
Biden said, “There are a lot of things that can change,” with regard to police training.
Biden also announced that if elected, he would implement a “police oversight board” in his first 100 days as president.

The former Vice President spoke on his time with the Obama administration, saying:
“We set up, in the Justice Department, the ability for the Civil Rights Division to go in and look at the practices and policies of police departments. That’s why we were able to stop stop-and-frisk.
“Re-establish that with more teeth in it. Because we also have to fundamentally change the way in which police are trained.”
The National Review’s Dan McLaughlin reported in an article titled Joe Biden Doesn’t Know How Guns Work:
“But anyone who has been trained in police work or the military could tell you: Firing a gun is always potentially deadly force. You shoot for center mass, to kill, or you don’t shoot at all. If you’re not prepared to kill someone, you should not even point a loaded gun at them, much less fire it. If you don’t have grounds to shoot to kill, you don’t have grounds to shoot.
“There are all kinds of things that can go wrong by trying to shoot to wound, because most people are not expert marksmen, and even expert marksmen do not have the greatest of aim in chaotic circumstances. You can miss, and the person you’re shooting at isn’t stopped. You can miss, and hit and kill an innocent bystander. You can hit someone in an artery, and they bleed to death. You can be thinking “shoot to wound,” but the second radio car responding to the scene rolls out thinking ‘firefight in progress’ and opens both barrels.
“One thing police training gets right, though, is that it draws a clear line around firing your gun only when you are prepared to kill. Blurring that line is only going to make things worse.”
Joe doesn’t have the best track records with firearms knowledge. Here’s a report Law Enforcement Today’s Mitch McKinley brought you in January of this year.
Democrat presidential hopeful Joe Biden launched into the New Year by urging voters to make 2020 the year for gun control.
Biden did this while re-tweeting an Associated Press story which showed an elevated number of mass killings in the U.S. in 2019.
He pointed to 210 killings in 2019 as the reason to have sweeping gun control that would only impact law-abiding gun owners, yet no mention of keeping the guns out of the hands of criminals that used them to shoot and kill 47 police officers.
Incidentally, the list was not isolated to firearm-related killings, it included killings carried out with axes, knives, and other weapons too.
In an ironic twist, the AP story showed California (the state with more gun control than any other) also had the most “mass slayings” of any state in 2019.
But Biden re-tweeted the story anyway, and used it to call for gun control:
“2019 was a year of record violence — it will be a moral failure if we allow 2020 to be the same. We have to elect leaders with the courage to take on the @NRA and pass common-sense gun safety reform. We have to end this epidemic.”
According to the L.A. Times article he was referring:
A database compiled by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University in Boston shows that there were more mass killings in 2019 than any year dating back to at least the 1970s, punctuated by a chilling succession of deadly rampages during the summer.
In all, there were 41 mass killings, defined as when four or more people are killed excluding the perpetrator. Of those, 33 were mass shootings. More than 210 people were killed.
Most of the mass killings barely became national news, failing to resonate among the general public because they didn’t spill into public places like massacres in El Paso and Odessa, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; Virginia Beach, Va.; and Jersey City, N.J.
You want to know what else didn’t make news? The number of times cops were put in potentially deadly situations because of the new laws in several states that allows violent criminals to be released almost immediately after their arrest because they have removed the bail system for virtually every charge.
But you won’t find Joe talking about that. Yet, he claims that he really has his finger on the pulse of gun control.
In September, following a mass shooting at a church in Sunderland Springs, TX, Biden said:
“It’s irrational, with all due respect to the governor of Texas, it’s irrational what they’re doing. I mean every day; you see a mass shooting.”
Great on the hyperbole there Joe. Irrational to me is talking about bouncing kids on your lap and talking about your leg hair to kids. But I digress.
Biden of course had been talking about the new Texas state law, which was signed by Gov. Abbott and which allowed residents of Texas to carry firearms in churches.
On Sunday, good guys with a gun took out a bad guy with a gun at the West Freeway Church of Christ in Tarrant County on Sunday.
According to witnesses, several parishioners opened fire on the gunman, killing him. At least one of the good guys was a security guard.
Gun rights advocates praised the actions of those who took out the shooter, citing it as an example of a “good guy with a gun” which stopped a violent attack.
Two men were killed in the shooting in addition to the gunman.
“We lost two great men today, but it could have been a lot worse,” said Britt Farmer, pastor of the West Freeway Church. “I’m thankful that our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves.”
You’ve gotta love Texas. Had this happened in states such as New York, Connecticut or California, the outcome may have been much different.
The church was live streaming the service when shots were fired. A video that was posted on Twitter shows the moment that shots were fired and the response of the armed security member. We will caution you it may be graphic for some readers.

Biden and other left-wing Democrats have repeatedly railed against having guns in schools, churches, and hospitals and argue that their presence does not make mass shootings less likely.
“The idea that we don’t have elimination of assault-type weapons, magazines that can hold multiple bullets in them—it’s absolutely mindless,” said Biden last September.
Speaking of mindless, Joe, are you suggesting that we return to single shot muskets? Because other than that, all weapons hold multiple rounds, including revolvers. This is the problem with the anti-gun nuts. They don’t have a clue what they’re talking about, which they prove every time they open their mouths.
“It’s no violation of the Second Amendment. It’s just a bow of special interests of the gun manufacturers and the NRA,” he continued…. ah yes, the left’s favorite boogeyman, the National Rifle Association.
Robert Francis O’Rourke, known to his Mexican brethren as “Beto”, weighed in after the latest shooting.
“So saddened to hear about another church shooting in Texas, this one in White Settlement near Fort Worth. Clearly what we are doing in Texas, what we are doing in this country, when it comes to guns is not working.”
Uh, sorry Robert. But in this case, the ability of Texans to defend themselves from nuts with a gun worked extremely well.
If the gunman had been the only one in the church with a gun on Sunday, Lord only knows what the body count would be. Thanks to Gov. Abbott, an armed person or persons in the church were able to shoot the gunman and save lives.
Abbott signed the bill last June, which allowed Texans to carry guns in places of worship. This is what triggered Uncle Joe.
The gunman was identified as a 43-year-old man from River Oaks. We will not identify him because he doesn’t deserve the publicity. Killed were Anton Wallace, 64, of Fort Worth and Richard White, 67, of River Oaks.
The suspect had arrests in several jurisdictions, and had been arrested in Tarrant County, as well as other states on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
After Gov. Abbott signed the bill, the church’s leadership had made a decision to train its members to protect each other.
“I think you can see from the video that that guy was surrounded rather quickly by more than just a few people,” according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton said that he hoped that more churches will prepare for shootings the way West Freeway Church of Christ did.
Back in 2013, Uncle Joe was at a Facebook Town Hall sponsored by Parents Magazine. One questioner at the time named Kate asked how gun owners would be able to protect themselves if Congress passed a bill banning certain weapons and high capacity magazines.
“Kate, if you want to protect yourself get a double-barreled shotgun,” Biden said.
Biden related that he had told his wife that since they lived in a secluded area that’s wooded, he told her:
“Jill if there’s ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here, walk out, put [up] that double barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house.”
He really said that.
“You don’t need an AR-15. Buy a shotgun! Buy a shotgun!”
Now, for anyone who has ever fired a shotgun, it isn’t exactly the easiest weapon to use and to maintain target acquisition of, especially for most females. According to a gun shop owner in Texas, the AR-15, not a shotgun, is a better weapon of choice for home defense due to its accuracy.
“The AR-15 is now a mainstream weapon because of its quality design and accuracy,” said Jesse Bonner.
He added that smaller women could have more trouble firing a 12-gauge shotgun due to the recoil.
Probably the most ludicrous thing Biden has ever said (granted, there is a LOT of competition) was during an interview with Field and Stream magazine.
He suggested that if someone was looking to protect themselves from an intruder they should “just fire the shotgun through the door.” He added that most people “can handle a shotgun a hell of a lot better than they can a semi-automatic weapon.”
The fact that Biden is leading the field of Democrat candidates set to run against President Trump should give comfort to Trump supporters. The guy is a gaffe a minute and the more he speaks, the more clueless he appears.
