Biden claimed during a CNN town hall that mass shooters get their guns illegally – but here’s the truth

CINCINNATI, OH – President Biden claimed during Wednesday’s CNN town hall that mass shooters were getting their guns illegally, a claim not supported by facts.

Breitbart columnist AWR Hawkins looked at a number of this year’s high-profile mass shootings and determined that in most incidences, the shooter acquired his firearm(s) legally.

Hawkins looked into the Atlanta area shootings on March 16 that killed eight; the Boulder, Colorado, shooting on March 22 that left ten dead; the April 15 Indianapolis FedEx shooting, which resulted in eight deaths; and the San Jose shooting on May 26 that resulted in nine deaths.

All of those incidents involved lawfully obtained firearms.

Hawkins went on to list other mass shooting incidents involving gunmen using lawfully obtained firearms, meaning each followed the legal process required to purchase a firearm, including a background check.

His listed included the Parkland high school attacker (February 14, 2018), Texas church attacker (November 5, 2017), Las Vegas attacker (October 1, 2017), Alexandria attacker (June 14, 2017), Orlando attacker (June 12, 2016), UCLA gunman (June 1, 2016), San Bernardino attackers (December 2, 2015), Colorado Springs attacker (October 31, 2015), Umpqua Community College attacker (October 1, 2015), Alison Parker’s attacker (August 26, 2015), Lafayette movie theater attacker (July 23, 2015), Chattanooga attacker (July 16, 2015), Alleged Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal attacker (Jun 17, 2015), Muhammad Cartoon Contest attackers (May 3, 2014), Las Vegas cop killers (June 9, 2015), Santa Barbara attacker (May 23, 2014), Fort Hood attacker (April 2, 2014), Arapahoe High School attacker (December 13, 2013), D.C. Navy Yard attacker (September 16, 2013), Aurora movie theater attacker (July 20, 2012), Gabby Giffords’ attacker (January 8, 2011),Fort Hood attacker (November 5, 2009), Northern Illinois University attacker (February 14, 2008), and the Virginia Tech attacker (April 16, 2007).

Hawkins pointed out that background checks only look into a person’s previous criminal history. Many of the mass shooters had no criminal history or disqualifying record prior to their attack.

Mother Jones, an online database that tracks statistics involving mass shootings, indicated that between 1982 and May 26, 2021, only 16 shooters out of 125 mass shooting incidents in the database were confirmed to have obtained their firearm(s) unlawfully.

President Biden also created concern about Second Amendment rights during the same town hall when he said he was looking into a ban on 9mm handguns, one of the most popular home defense firearms used by Americans.

While responding to a question about how he plans to address gun violence, Biden said:

“The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon — whether it’s a — whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle — is ridiculous.”

His response led to the comment about shooters obtaining guns illegally:

“I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things, but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term.  So, here’s what I’ve done: The people who, in fact, are using those weapons are acquiring them illegally — illegally.”

The town hall event was held Wednesday night in Cincinnati and moderated by CNN host Don Lemon.

The internet explodes after Biden suggests a 9mm handgun ban – but here’s why some say he slipped

July 23, 2021

CINCINNATI, OH – During a CNN town hall event in Ohio on Wednesday night, President Biden suggested that he would like to ban 9mm pistols that can carry more ammunition than Democrats feel is acceptable.

CNN Anchor Don Lemon moderated the event broadcast live to an international audience. The town hall was billed as an opportunity for the President to discuss “a wide range of issues facing the nation ranging from Covid-19 to the economy.”

When the conversation turned to gun control, President Biden bragged that he was the only politician to pass an assault weapons ban.”

“I’m the only guy that ever got — passed legislation when I was a senator to make sure we eliminated assault weapons.”

The President then said he supported a ban on certain 9mm pistols, among other weapons:

“The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a, whether it’s a 9mm pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous.”

Despite Democrats’ often used phrase, “Nobody is taking your guns away,” the President’s comments are unlikely to reassure gun rights advocates that the Second Amendment is safe.

9mm pistols are the most popular handgun used for personal protection inside the United States.

According to Pew Pew Tactical, 9mm pistols are the best choice for home defense for most Americans. Cost and size are important factors why:

“The 9mm is easy to find and cheap when compared to other calibers (~20 cents for a 9mm FMJ and ~40 cents for a .45 ACP round).

“Its smaller size means it has mild recoil and higher capacity magazines (usually 15+).”

Pew Pew Tactical points out that most police agencies use the 9mm pistol, and the FBI recently returned to using the caliber after determining the step up, .40 caliber round, “were causing excessive wear on pistols and were less easily controlled by female agents.”

The popular gun rights blog, “The Truth About Guns” (TAG) said that the President’s words were not a slip or a gaffe, but a glimpse into what Democrats really want:

“For years, gun control advocates have repeatedly beaten the same drum. They say their goal is to establish ‘common sense’ gun control laws as a means of protecting Americans from so-called ‘gun violence.’ When gun owners objected, they condescendingly assured us that no one wants to take your guns away.

“But Second Amendment supporters weren’t buying that line. They could see the direction gun controllers were headed and repeatedly warned that their endgame is to ban all civilian-owned firearms.”

TAG added that there has been a steady move by the Left to eliminate the Second Amendment:

“It began with heavily regulating things like fully automatic firearms and suppressors to the point where the average Americans couldn’t afford those firearms.

“They’ve moved to outlawing concealed carry, ‘Saturday night specials’ and ‘cop-killer’ bullets. More recently, they’ve targeted ‘assault weapons’ like AR-15s and now it’s ghost guns.”

President Biden claimed that Americans did not need weapons like 9mm pistols because “crime was down.”

Crime has been surging across the nation, especially in blue states where state and local politicians have defunded police and enacted leniency measures resulting in criminals receiving early prison release or no-cash bail.

The “defund the police” movement and lack of political support for police officers have led to significant shortages of police in major cities across the nation.

Homicides are skyrocketing out of control in cities like Chicago, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and more.

TAG said the President including 9mm pistols in his call for a weapons ban was a warning shot to gun rights advocates:

“There it is. It’s no longer just scary black rifles he’s targeting. Now it’s 9mm pistols, too. Then it will be revolvers, lever guns, bolt action rifles, and shotguns. Biden’s admission is the culmination of decades of incrementalism by those whose only goal is full civilian disarmament.

“First, we were told fully automatic firearms were simply too dangerous. No one needed them to hunt deer…

“We’ve warned for years they were going to move toward a ban and full-on confiscation and, guess what? The Biden administration has repeatedly proven that prediction to be 100% accurate.”

The President discussed several issues during the town hall, including the pandemic, a damaged economy, voting rights, and the use of the filibuster in the Senate, but the threat to ban 9mm pistols was the most chilling for gun owners.

TAG explained:

“As long as the Democrats and the gun control lobby never came out and fully admitted they wanted to eliminate civilian gun ownership entirely, they were safe. They got lots of cover for this deception from their compliant friends in the media. And we were told we were hysterical, paranoid, delusional. No one wants to take your guns.”

“But last night President Biden said the quiet part out loud. They do have a plan. They do have an end goal and that’s to completely decimate our God-given right to keep and bear arms. He’s coming after handguns, too.”

President Biden has made the call to ban 9mm pistols before. In November 2019 while campaigning for the presidency, he said at a posh $2,800 per-person private event:

“Why should we allow people to have military-style weapons including pistols with 9mm bullets and can hold 10 or more rounds?

“We protect geese from Canada more than we do people.”

At the time, the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) said then-candidate Biden’s position was not in accordance with the law or precedent:

“It is impossible to square Biden’s statement with the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Second Amendment. Many types of firearms, such as the AR-15, are ‘in common use’ for lawful purposes like self-defense and therefore protected under the Second Amendment. The 9mm pistol is not just ‘in common use’ for self-defense.

“As the production statistics indicate, it may be the most common firearm in use for self-defense. Therefore, it is not permissible under the Second Amendment for a jurisdiction to prohibit 9mm pistols. The law-abiding 9mm pistol-owning residents of the D.C., Chicago, and a handful of Chicago suburbs are a testament to this fact.”

The NRA-ILA said Biden had not taken the time to properly educate himself before making wild claims:

“Biden’s political career is an ongoing spectacle of anti-gun incompetence. However, his high-profile gaffes can serve an instructive purpose. Biden is emblematic of a political class that cannot be bothered to learn the most rudimentary information concerning firearms and the right to keep and bear arms.

“Despite nearly four decades in the U.S. Senate and eight years as vice president, he is still a complete ignoramus on the subject. Biden and his cohort don’t want to know anything about guns, gun rights, or gun owners. Rather, they prefer to mindlessly indulge their anti-gun prejudice at every opportunity.”
