Authorities: suspect shot police sergeant while trying to rob methadone clinic

BALTIMORE, Md. – Police have just confirmed that a sergeant in the Baltimore City Police Department has been rushed to the hospital after sustaining at least one gunshot wound.

According to an update just after 9 a.m. Monday, police have confirmed that the officer who was injured in the shooting was a Baltimore Police sergeant.

Authorities have responded to the 2100 block of Maryland Ave, where a total of three people were injured by gunfire, including the sergeant. Multiple people were taken out of the building on stretchers.

The location of the reported shooting is a treatment clinic called Man Alive. They specialize in substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Police say it was a robbery gone wrong.

According to multiple reports from witnesses, a gunshot rang out from inside a counselor’s office. That’s when they say the suspect emerged from the office, holding the counselor at gunpoint. The suspect allegedly screamed at the counselor and demanded access to the area where the medication is kept.

“Open that [expletive] door or I’m going to shoot you,” patient George Dowler recalled the man saying. “She let him in, and then I screamed, ‘Let her [expletive] go!’” he continued. “He did let her go, and she comes running back toward me, and I said ‘Go to your office. Go to your office.’”

The Baltimore City FOP tweeted about the shooting.

The Baltimore City PD originally confirmed the officer involved shooting on Twitter Monday morning. They said that the suspect was also down.

FOX45 reported that the sergeant was shot below the vest. The LEO was then rushed to Shock Trauma. Their condition is not known at this time.

Police are asking civilians to avoid the area and to expect road closures while the investigation into the shooting plays out.

The department confirmed that a press briefing offering more details on the shooting will be held outside of Shock Trauma medical center.

The shooting took place in North Baltimore. Sources say that the clinic is a methadone treatment center.

News crews flooded the scene after the Baltimore Firefighters Union tweeted about some of the details of the shooting just before 8 a.m. on Monday.

The Baltimore Sun noted that in a recorded messaging system, the clinic billed itself as one of the longest-running medical treatment facilities in the city.
