ST. PAUL, Minn. – Police said that at least three people were shot and another woman was hit by a car after chaos erupted outside of the Minnesota State Fair on Monday night.

The St. Paul Police Department issued a press release in which they said a 19-year-old woman was struck by a car outside the fairgrounds at approximately 10 p.m. Officers responded to the scene and found the girl breathing but unresponsive.

She was transported to Regions Hospital to be treated for her injuries. According to a report from Fox News, she remained in critical condition on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses claimed that a fight had broken out in the area just before the girl was struck by the car. Somehow she ended up in the roadway and was hit by a passing vehicle. Initially, the driver stopped his vehicle, but when onlookers began punching and kicking his car, he climbed back in and drove away. Police say that the driver traveled a short distance and then pulled over and called 911.

Authorities do not believe that the driver had been impaired and he was reportedly cooperating with police.

But while emergency crews were investigating the scene and attempting to gather information about what had transpired, several gunshots rang out just a few blocks away, sources said. When the shots were fired, the crowd was sent scrambling in every direction.

St. Paul officers ran toward the direction of the gunfire, where they discovered a man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Regions Hospital. Officials say that later in the evening, two additional victims showed up to area hospitals with gunshot injuries.

“Everybody was put at risk. Several shots were fired,” St. Paul Police spokesman Steve Linders said in an interview. “We’re lucky more people weren’t injured or killed.”

The initial 20-year-old man suffered a shot to the stomach area. Another 20-year-old male victim suffered a shot in the hand and an 18-year-old man was hit in the shoulder, Linders said.

The Star Tribune reported that early on Tuesday morning, a fight broke out between approximately family members of at least one of the injured men inside Regions Hospital. The hospital was briefly placed on lockdown as authorities deescalated the situation.

Police say that officials were investigating the scene of another homicide just a short distance from the fairgrounds, where a man had been shot in the stomach and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

St. Paul police said that no arrests have been made as of yet and the investigation into the car accident as well as the shootings are ongoing.

The Minnesota State Fair said that more than 250,000 visitors had come to the fair on Monday. It was a record-breaking number for attendance.
