PHOENIX – Officials have identified the man who went on a violent crime spree in the Phoenix area on Wednesday. The crimes include murder, armed robberies, and carjackings. His life ended when he pointed his weapon at police who were trying to take him into custody.

According to Phoenix police, Todd Munson, 25, is responsible for crimes that included eight different major offenses around the Valley in a matter of nine hours, reported ABC News.

Thursday afternoon, sources confirmed to ABC15 that a picture of someone named Todd Munson with a record on file with the Arizona Department of Corrections was the person involved in the violent crime spree.

Crime #1 – Murder

The trail of horrors began about 4:30 a.m. Police responded to a call of shots fired near 48th Street and Elliot Road. Upon arrival they found Nathan Cahal, 40, had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation detectives determined Munson was the primary suspect. They found him in the area of 67th Ave. and Bell Road. As they attempted contact, Munson fled, jumping over a wall. Detectives heard a gunshot. They discovered later that he had an accidental discharge with his firearm and shot himself in the leg.


Crime #2 – Attempted Carjacking

At 12:30 p.m., Glendale police received information about an armed suspect trying to steal someone’s vehicle. The suspect matched the description of the person wanted in the homicide. It was later learned that the suspect was unable to take the vehicle and the victim drove off.

Crime #3 – Carjacking

After the unsuccessful carjacking, the suspect pointed his weapon at another victim and stole his white pick-up truck near 64th Avenue and Bell Road.

Crime #4 – Carjacking

At 12:50 p.m., Phoenix police received information about a stolen vehicle at gunpoint near 7th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. Phoenix police said the suspect abandoned the white truck, allowing it to roll into a business. He then stole a yellow Corvette at gunpoint from a victim.

Crime #5 – Attempted Armed Robbery

The suspect fled the area in the stolen Corvette. At 1:00 p.m. he stopped at a gas station near Tatum Boulevard and Union Hills Drive.

Victims told police a man stopped in a parking lot, pointed a weapon at them and demanded their cell phones. The two people took shelter behind gas pumps and the armed suspect fled without gaining their property.

Crime #6 – Armed Robbery

At 1:43 p.m., the Phoenix police helicopter was able to locate the stolen vehicle and began to direct unmarked police units to it. Before officers were able to get close, the suspect stopped in the front yard of a house near 46th Avenue and Country Gables Drive. Munson pointed his weapon at a female victim. He stole her phone and fled the area.

Crime #7 – Brandishing a Firearm/Attempted Armed Robbery

While at a red light at North Valley Parkway and Norterra Parkway, the suspect pointed a gun at a victim who was stopped at the light in the next lane. Police said Munson demanded the victim’s phone, but drove away before obtaining it.

Crime #8 – Assault with a Deadly Weapon on Police Officers

At 1:47 p.m., Phoenix Police Department’s Special Assignments Unit (SAU) followed the suspect and the chase came to an end at North Valley Parkway and Dove Valley Road.

After stopping the vehicle, Munson pointed his weapon at a Phoenix officer. That officer and another officer fired their rifles at Munson.

Violent Crime Spree Leads to Death

Police said Munson was pronounced dead at the location. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene. No officers were seriously injured in the incident.

According to online state corrections records, Munson previously served time for aggravated DUI, endangerment, and drug charges, among others, according to ABC.
