Get woke, go broke: State divesting public funds from police-bashing Ben & Jerry’s after anti-Semitic Israel boycott

Share:

ARIZONA – Following the decision by the company Ben & Jerry’s to boycott Israel by way of ceasing sales of products within the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem, Arizona has since divested all public funds from the parent organization in order to adhere to state law regarding business dealings with entities that actively boycott Israel.

Back in July, Ben & Jerry’s decided to announce that they would no longer sell their ice cream in certain portions of Israel due to the company proclaiming that parts of Israel aren’t actually Israel – but are rather territories belonging to Palestine:

“We believe it is inconsistent with our values for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to be sold in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).”

“We have a longstanding partnership with our licensee, who manufactures Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Israel and distributes it in the region. We have been working to change this, and so we have informed our licensee that we will not renew the license agreement when it expires at the end of next year.”

Earlier in September, Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee announced that due to the company Ben & Jerry’s boycotting Israel, the state will be defunding all public fund investments from Ben & Jerry’s parent company Unilever PLC.

But the state of Arizona divesting from Ben & Jerry’s parent company isn’t for the sake of partisan politics – it’s actually a state law that State Treasurer Yee referenced that forbids public entities from adopting “a procurement, investment or other policy that has the effect of inducing or requiring a person or company to boycott Israel.”

State Treasurer Yee sent the following letter to Richard Williams of Unilever PLC regarding the decision to divest from their company:

“Arizona law states that a public entity or public fund may not enter a contract or directly invest [monies] with a person or company that is engaged in boycotting Israel.

On August 3, 2021, our office wrote to Unilever PLC, informing your firm that has been identified as actively boycotting Israel due to the actions of Ben & Jerry’s, a subsidiary of Unilever, announcing that it will withdraw sales from the West Bank and other territories in Israel at the end of 2022. This would be in direct violation of Arizona Statutes § 35-393.”

State Treasurer Yee mentioned in her letter that she got a response from Unilever back on August 5th, where Unilever claimed that they personally aren’t boycotting Israel – simply Ben & Jerry’s is doing such.

However, State Treasurer Yee explained that if even a single subsidiary is boycotting Israel, then the parent company now becomes a restricted entity regarding public funds:

“I appreciated that response from Unilever on August 5, 2021, stating Unilever is not boycotting Israel and the follow up on the conference call today with my investment management team.

While I understand the circumstances where the acquisition of Ben & Jerry’s in 2000 allowed them to retain its independent board and ability to make decisions in direct opposition to Unilever, the fact remains that Ben & Jerry’s is a legal subsidiary of Unilever and due to the decision by Ben & Jerry’s, continues to be in violation of Arizona law.”

State Treasurer Yee informed Unilever that public funds of $143 million have already been reduced to $50 million – and the remaining funds will be pulled out by September 21st.

Ben & Jerry’s has a long history of injecting itself into contentious topics – such as matters related to police defunding, ending qualified immunity for police officers, and financially supporting anti-police groups.

The company went so far as to allege that the shooting of Daunte Wright back in April by Officer Kim Potter was “rooted in white supremacy”:

“The murder of [Daunte Wright] is rooted in white supremacy and results from the intentional criminalization of Black and Brown communities. This system can’t be reformed. It must be dismantled and a real system of public safety rebuilt from the ground up. #DefundThePolice”

As it stands, there isn’t any evidence that the shooting of Daunte Wright had any racial motivations associated with it – in fact, former Officer Potter has maintained that it was an accident over mistaking her sidearm for her taser.

While that is of course quite a serious mistake, “white supremacy” had nothing to do with it – plus, Potter was also criminally charged, and her case is working through the courts – so it’s not like the incident is being brushed aside.

Defund Ben & Jerry’s? Washed up ice cream company demand police departments be eliminated.

(Originally published April 15th, 2021)

The following contains editorial content written by a retired Chief of Police and current staff writer for Law Enforcement Today.

WATERBURY, VT- In April of 2000, Unilever purchased Ben & Jerry’s and with it they got the two over-aged hippies anti-American, anti-police garbage.

The funny part about that purchase was that the two long-haired, maggot infested, (likely) dope-smoking hippies, who railed against that capitalist system, managed to rake in over $325 million in the sale, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Because you know, hypocrisy.

Everyone knows that Ben & Jerry’s has been and currently is down with the revolution, with the roots of the company forged in far-left progressive ideals.

So it was clearly no surprise when Ben & Jerry’s, which despite being under the Unilever umbrella still embraces woke ideology, spoke out against the shooting of criminal Daunte Wright in Minnesota.

Of course, despite zero evidence to support their absurd claim, Wright’s death was “rooted in white supremacy,” they tweeted.

Getting involved in far-left neo-Marxist claptrap is nothing new. For years, they have sung the hysteria about climate change, and of course are on the forefront of LGBTQ issues.

However they have gone far beyond all of that, now calling for the complete dismantling of the American criminal justice system, in particular the police.

“The murder of #DaunteWright is rooted in white supremacy and results from the intentional criminalization of Black and Brown communities. This system can’t be reformed. It must be dismantled and a real system of public safety rebuilt from the ground up. #DefundThePolice.”

Their moronic tween has been liked in excess of 44.5 thousand times, and there are over 13,000 comments on it.

According to Right Scoop:

“Boy the radical socialists are coming out of the woodwork on Daunte Wright’s killing just like they did a year ago with George Floyd, making absolutely absurd claims in order to abolish police and rebuild it with ‘wellness counselors and tow trucks.’ And the sad thing is that there are too many people who’ve bought into this garbage and are applauding Ben & Jerry’s for this asinine statement.

“You know, we may not recognize this country in another decade. It’s already harder to recognize now than it was just over a decade ago.”

In the case of Wright, what social justice warriors like Ben & Jerry’s neglect to mention is that it was Wright who set the wheels in motion for what would ultimately lead to his death.

The irony in this whole situation really cannot be understated. Wright had an arrest warrant out for him for failing to appear in court for having an unregistered handgun. Here’s a picture of the “boy scout” with his favorite toy.

Just last week, Joe Biden, the current occupant of the White House held a press briefing in which part of what he complained about was a so-called surplus of unregistered guns.

Yet that point has been ignored by far-left media, neo-Marxists like Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and her fellow “squad” members, and former president Barack Obama.

At least House Majority Whip James Clyburn gets it:

A black officer (clearly a white supremacist) stopped Wright for a traffic violation and it was learned there was a warrant for his arrest. Here is part of the narrative:

Right up until the time Wright was to be placed under arrest by said black police officer there was no physical interaction between the officers and Wright. It wasn’t until he was going to be handcuffed and when he started to resist arrest that a physical altercation ensued.

As Wright was struggling with the officers, now former-Officer Kim Potter warned Wright she was going to Taser him, and in fact yelled, “Taser! Taser! Taser! with the belief she was in fact going for her Taser, when in fact she had pulled her firearm. She fired one shot and then realized her mistake, and in fact immediately said, “Oh shit! I shot him!”

There is a legal standard called a “spontaneous (excited) utterance,” which is actually an exception to the exclusionary rule; in other words, evidence gathered as a result of a spontaneous utterance is admissible as an exception to the hearsay rule.

Such an utterance is, according to the Legal Information Institute of Cornell Law School defines as, “…a statement that concerns a startling event, made by the declarant when the declarant is still under stress from the startling event.”

So in other words, Potter, under stress from a high-tension encounter with Wright yelled, “Taser!” three times, a clear indication that she had in fact believed she was pulling her Taser, not her firearm.

This wasn’t a case where she shot Wright, had an “oh shit” moment, and then said she was going for her Taser. This statement was made in the heat of the moment.

Another key is that police officers are trained when using their firearm to use what is referred to as a “double-tap.” In other words, they are shot to fire twice in rapid succession when using their firearm.

As a veteran officer with over 28 years of experience, Potter had been trained repeatedly to use a “double-tap” when firing her weapon. The fact she shot only once seems to indicate that she believed she was shooting her Taser, not her service weapon.

Also, new information has come forth that there was a 2nd warrant for Wright related to allegedly choking and robbing a woman at gunpoint.

In the wake of the George Floyd incident last May, a hue and cry rang out across the country for police officers to be equipped with body cameras, which the officers in Brooklyn Center were wearing.

The question becomes, if body cameras are worn so that we can know the “truth” of what happens in police encounters, why is it that despite the fact Potter clearly thought she was using her Taser, that doesn’t matter.

It’s still “racist cops hunting down black men.” What is the point of mandating body cameras if the truth doesn’t matter?

Look at officer-involved shootings over the past year which were clearly justified. Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin comes to mind, where he was armed with a knife, was shot by police and ended up paralyzed from the waist down.

Blake was portrayed by far-left media as a boy scout, when in reality, he was a sex offender who was subject to a restraining order at the home he was caught at.

The entire episode was caught on video, which clearly showed Blake carrying a knife at one point, yet the media pushed the narrative that he was “an unarmed black man shot by police.”

Of course, once the social media mob got hold of the incident, early Christmas looting started and “largely peaceful protesters” started fires, broke into businesses, and beating people up.

The truth doesn’t matter to these people. They are Marxists intent on destroying our country. And Ben & Jerry’s, being the true Marxist organization that it is, throws down with the revolution.

So, while Ben & Jerry’s demands that police departments be dismantled, they offer no solutions. The CEO of Unilever and whoever the president of Ben & Jerry’s is can likely afford all the private security they want.

Yet they are more than willing to leave low-income and middle-class citizens fend for themselves by removing police, while they enjoy their bodyguards and personal protection.

It’s like Congress. Tlaib can ask for police to be eliminated while she enjoys government-provided protection and gets to hide in the Capitol building behind Jersey barriers, 8-foot fences topped by concertina wire, and National Guard troops restricting access. “Security for me, you peons can go screw yourselves.”

Ben & Jerry’s fails to realize that when you have human beings making sometimes split-second decisions, sometimes mistakes will be made. It is human nature. Would they rather have a cyborg like in RoboCop that responds only as it is programmed to do? With no ability to reason? Use discretion?

Whenever human beings are put in the position of being police officers, mistakes can be made, sometimes tragic mistakes with fatal results. Yet despite screams from the left of systemic racism, the facts and data simply do not back that narrative up.

Ben & Jerry’s absurd, brain-dead tweet did gain some attention that they were probably not looking for.

Former MLB star Aubrey Huff made a great point, noting the hypocrisy of a company whose product contributes to diabetes and heart disease, much of which impacts people of color.

“You murder countless thousands a year @benandjerrys with diabetes, & heart disease.”

Rob Schmitt of Newsmax said:

“Stick to ice cream you idiots.”

Benny Johnson tweeted:

“Thanks, corporate ice cream.”

Finally, someone named Damani Felder decided to promote Ben & Jerry’s competitor Blue Bell:

“Reason #6,329,731 why Blue Bell ice cream will always be better. Ben & Jerry’s is run by virtue signaling, low energy, self-hating, social justice warrior cucks.”

Amen.

Ironically, diabetes and heart disease, caused in part by eating Ben & Jerry’s sugar-laden, high fat garbage product is responsible for killing hundreds of times more black Americans than police officers. Perhaps the two hippies and their minions should look in the mirror.

Think it’s time for the over 800,000 law enforcement officers, along with their families, friends and supporters to tell Woke & Jerry’s to stick their ice cream where the sun doesn’t shine.
