FBI Reports National Violent and Property Crime Rates are Down
The FBI announced a rather surprising statistic today. Despite what many Americans might imagine, violent and property crime is down for the first half of 2011, as compared to the 2010 rate for the same period. The Uniform Crime Report or UCR reports is the source document for this data. UCR data is compiled from 18,000 city, state, campus, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies. Overall violent crime is down 6.4% and property crimes decreased by 3.7%
By the numbers, violent crime is down as follows:
murder was down 5.7%
rape down 5.1%
robbery down 7.7%
aggravated assault down%.
This is surprising and heartening news in view of the continuing depressed economy.
