In Memoriam – Officer Nicholas C. Lee
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck has reported that Officer Nicholas Choung Lee, 40, a field training Officer, was killed in a vehicle crash early Friday. His probationary officer was critically injured.
The vehicle crash occurred around 8:00 am at the intersection of Loma Vista Drive and Doheny Road in the Greystone Mansion area of Beverly Hills. The officers were responding to an “unknown trouble” call when the crash occurred. The collision involved a truck hauling a dumpster style container normally used for large industrial trash with a bobcat on a flatbed trailer.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates that the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle and struck the patrol car almost broadside on the driver’s side door. It appeared that the truck was coming down a hill and struck the driver’s side door as the officers were turning in the intersection to head up the hill.
Possible brake failure on the truck is being considered as the crash’s cause. A detailed vehicle examination is needed to confirm that initial suspicion. The California Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating
Officer Lee, who was driving the patrol vehicle died at the scene. The injured probationary officer, who graduated from the police academy three months ago, and the driver of the truck were transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical condition. Both are expected to survive. Their names have not been released.
Officer Lee was a 14-year veteran of the department and is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
