Chief Bryan Roberts of the Draper Utah Police Department has sadly reported that Sgt. Derek Johnson was shot and killed responding to an unknown distress call where shots had been fired.

The incident occurred on Fort Street near South St. in Draper. Local residents reported hearing a gunshot about 5:30 am and went outside their hones to investigate. Some residents were observed dragging Sgt. Johnson out of his patrol vehicle and rendering medical attention including CPR.  An adult male and female at the scene were also found suffering from gunshot wounds.

Not knowing if additional suspects may be involved, responding officers cordoned off an area surrounding the scene and established a search perimeter.  Nearby law enforcement agencies supplied SWAT teams, ground personnel, and a helicopter to assist in the search for suspects.

Emergency medical personnel on scene continued performing CPR on the Sgt. until a medivac helicopter arrived and flew him to Intermountain Medical Center.  Sadly, Sgt.  Johnson succumbed to his injuries.

The currently unidentified adult male and female at the scene were also transported to Intermountain Medical Center, They are both reportedly in critical condition. Once it was determined that there were no outstanding suspects, the search ceased, and the shooting investigation continued. No further details were released.
