In a Law Enforcement Today exclusive, Sergeant Jeremy Peak an investigator from the Atchison County, KS Sheriff’s Office investigating the death of Sgt. David Enzbrenner talked to LET about his passing.  Sgt. Peak wants to thank Law Enforcement Today’s members for their prayers and good wishes posted in David Enzbrenner’s memory.

Enzbrenner, a 24 year member of the department, was on a call completely unrelated to his death.  He was serving a nuisance order to a citizen who was collecting too much scrap metal in his yard, less than two blocks from the fallen officer’s own home.

The suspect, Skyler Barbee, was seen driving down the street while two officers were still on scene.   Officer Enzbrenner told the other officer to go ahead and clear.  Peak believes he was walking back to his car when the fatal attack ensued. Barbee, parked his car at his own home. He walked back approximately two and half blocks to where Enzbrenner remained on scene. The suspect walked up behind him and shot him from behind. Officer Enzbrenner never had chance and never even knew what was happening. Then Barbee turned the gun on himself.

Sgt. Peak recognizes the following agencies which assumed all law enforcement duties in Atchison, allowing David Enzbrenner’s colleagues from the Atchison Police Department time to mourn;

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department, Olathe Police Department, Kickapoo Tribal Police, Kansas Highway Patrol, Buchanan County Missouri Sheriff’s Office, and Platte County Missouri Sheriff’s Office have been patrolling the streets and taking calls. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation assisted the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office in working the crime scene.

This is how the law enforcement family pulls together in a time of crisis.

David Enzbrenner was a well-respected police officer in the community.  He is a hero.
